Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: (( Then they )), meaning the disbelievers, (( will surely eat from it )), despite its ugliness, because of their intense hunger, (( and they will fill their bellies from it * and then indeed

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
" Then they, meaning the disbelievers, will surely eat from it, despite its ugliness, because of their intense hunger " I seek refuge in Allah. The phrase "they will surely eat" is a nominal sentence here, emphasized by "in" and the lam, is that not so? To indicate that their eating is continuous, because a nominal sentence indicates permanence and continuity, and it was emphasized with "in" and the lam to indicate that they eat from it with confirmed eating, even though it is repulsive in appearance, ugly in appearance, and repulsive in taste and smell. But, may Allah protect us, the intense hunger compels them to eat from it by force, without desire and without pleasure, but only to fill their bellies. And yet, if a person were in this world, he might prefer death to eating from this, but in the Fire they are punished by eating from it.
And for this reason He said
And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies. فإنهم لآكلون منها فمالئون منها البطون
[As-Saffat 37:66]
We ask Allah for well-being, meaning that they do not become satiated and do not limit themselves to the necessity. If you were presented in this world, while you are extremely hungry, with rotten meat, would you fill your belly with it? No, you would only eat the amount of necessity. If you tried to fill your belly, your self would refuse, and if you did fill it, you would be on the verge of vomiting it. But in the Fire, they are punished by this, so they do not eat the amount of need, but they fill their bellies. They eat and say, "Bring more, bring more," just as they are forced to drink the scalding water, and they drink it like the drinking of thirsty, wandering camels. This is part of the severity of their punishment, may Allah protect us, that their condition reaches such intense hunger that it compels them to eat from this vile tree, filling their bellies from it, and such intense thirst that it compels them to drink the scalding water, which is hot water from which they derive no benefit. Rather, Allah the Exalted said
and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines? وسقوا ماء حميما فقطع أمعاءهم
[Muhammad 47:15]
And He the Mighty and Majestic said regarding their bathing
Poured upon their heads will be scalding water (20) By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins. يصب من فوق رؤوسهم الحميم يصهر به ما في بطونهم والجلود
[Al-Hajj 22:19-20]
its heat reaches what is in the bellies, despite the rest of the body being in between, but the heat reaches that, as Allah the Exalted said
(6) It is the fire of Allah, [eternally] fueled, (7) Which mounts directed at the hearts. نار الله الموقدة التي تطلع على الأفئدة
[Al-Humazah 104:6-7]
it reaches the hearts. We ask Allah for safety. O Allah, save us from the Fire. He says
And they will fill their bellies from it فمالئون منها البطون
His statement "the bellies": the "al" here is for covenant, which covenant? The mental covenant. Can we not say it is the referential covenant because what indicates the belly preceded? We say the referential covenant requires the same word to precede, and here the word did not precede, but what indicates it preceded in His statement
They will surely eat إنهم لآكلون
because no one eats except one who has a belly
And they will fill their bellies from it فمالئون منها البطون
meaning the bellies are from them. He says
Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water. ثم إن لهم عليها لشوبا من حميم
[As-Saffat 37:67]
Then "thumma" is a conjunction indicating order and delay, which indicates that when they eat, they become thirsty, and when they become thirsty, the water does not come to them immediately, but it comes to them after a delay which Allah the Exalted specified in His statement
And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces وإن يستغيثوا يغاثوا بماء كالمهل يشوي الوجوه
[Al-Kahf 18:29]
So they are not, when they eat and become thirsty from it, given the water quickly. No, they call for help and supplicate for water to come to them to cool the heat of their thirst. But when they are given this water, it is given to them as a mixture of scalding water, meaning water with great heat. And "shub" is the blaze of the fire. This blaze was specified by Allah the Exalted in the verse I quoted a moment ago: when the water is brought near their faces to drink, it scorches their faces, may Allah protect us, it scorches them until their flesh falls off due to the intensity of its heat. And when they drink it, their intestines receive it, but they are cut by it
and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines? وسقوا ماء حميما فقطع أمعاءهم
[Muhammad 47:15]

O my brothers, we are not talking about the talk of the ancients; we are talking about a real matter. If a person imagines it, he is disturbed in reality. I mean, this is not a matter that was said or is said or that people say; this matter is the truth, the reality for these tyrants who lied to the messengers of Allah the Exalted and turned Allah's favor into disbelief. All of this will happen; it is not news of the ancients. For this reason, we must, when we read such verses, feel that this is the knowledge of certainty and that it will be the truth of certainty. This matter, after they become thirsty and call for help, they are not helped with cold water or sweet water, but with a mixture of scalding water, meaning hot water which they drink, and it mixes with what they eat from it, becoming a mixture for it. The author explained "shub" here as mixing. And "shabba" the water with milk means I mixed it. It is suitable for this and that, so it is mixing. It is also the blaze of the heat of this scalding water. All of this will be. The blaze is before the drinking, and the mixture is after the drinking.
