Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: ((So when they both submitted)) they bowed and submitted to the command of Allah the Exalted ((and he laid him down on his forehead)) he threw him down upon it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Allah the Exalted said
So when they both submitted
"they bowed and submitted to the command of Allah"
And he laid him down on his forehead
Aslama means they surrendered to the command of Allah and submitted to His command out of reluctance or out of willingness and desire? Out of willingness and desire, without a doubt, from the father who intended and resolved to carry out the command of Allah, and the son who accepted this command with an open chest and urged his father to do what Allah commanded him. This is the utmost of submission, and this is submission of the heart.
And he laid him down on his forehead
This is submission of the limbs, meaning Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) laid his son down on his forehead, meaning he threw him down on the ground on his forehead, to slaughter him. He only laid him down on his forehead so that he would not see his face when he slaughtered him, and so that the son would not see the knife and be frightened. It is known that the one being slaughtered seeing the knife terrifies him. It is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he saw a man sharpening a blade to slaughter a sheep, so he said
Do you want to kill it twice?
because if the beast is startled, this is a great terror, to the extent that some beasts, when they see the knife being sharpened, flee, whereas they were previously calm. The important point is that Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) laid his son down on his forehead with speed and strength in carrying out the command of Allah Mighty and Majestic. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said "and he laid him down on his forehead, he threw him down upon it, and every person has two foreheads with the forehead between them, and that was at Mina, and he placed the knife on his neck but it did not do anything due to a barrier from the divine power" Now, we say, and we said previously, that the stories of the previous prophets are only taken from the Book and the authentic Sunnah, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted
Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud and those after them? No one knows them but Allah.
[Ibrahim:9] And in the story of Ibrahim, it is not permissible for us to go beyond the Qur'an or to estimate anything that the context does not require. Here he says "he laid him down on his forehead, he threw him down on his forehead" and the forehead is the edge of the forehead, meaning the corners, and I mentioned to you the wisdom of this action. As for the author's saying "and that was at Mina" this needs evidence. It is undoubtedly in Makkah because Isma'il grew up in Makkah from his youth, but that it was in Mina needs evidence from the Book or the Sunnah, otherwise it is obligatory to refrain from it. And he says "he placed the knife on his neck but it did not do anything due to a barrier from the divine power" this also needs evidence, and it is not in the Noble Qur'an that he placed the knife on his neck. So it is obligatory for us to refrain from this, we do not affirm it and we do not deny it, because the Qur'an did not affirm it and did not deny it. But in my opinion, and Allah knows best, if this had happened, it would have been wise to mention it, because it indicates a sign from the signs of Allah, which is the ineffectiveness of the knife on his neck. If such a thing had happened, Allah the Exalted would have mentioned it because of what it indicates of a great sign from the signs of Allah. And what we are certain of now is that what happened was that he laid him down on his forehead to slaughter him, and that is sufficient as a boast that nothing remained but for the knife to pass over his neck. So what happened? Allah the Exalted said
(104) We called to him, "O Abraham, (105) You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
[As-Saffat 37:104-105]
His saying
And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,
[As-Saffat 37:103]
"Lamma" is conditional and requires a condition and its answer, so its condition is His saying
Aslama
and "talah" is attached to it.
And We called out to him وناديناه
It is not appropriate for us to make it attached to "aslama," but the scholars differed regarding the "waw" here. It was said that it is superfluous, and the estimation of the speech is: "So when they both submitted and he laid him down on his forehead, We called out to him, 'O Ibrahim, you have truly fulfilled the vision.'" And others said it is not superfluous, because the addition of letters of meaning that imply difference cannot occur in the Noble Qur'an. Rather, it is attached to something estimated, so the estimation is: "So when they both submitted and he laid him down on his forehead, the execution of the command of Allah was realized," or something similar to that appropriate speech. Then, attached to the deleted answer, is His saying
(104) We called to him, "O Abraham, (105) You have fulfilled the vision. وناديناه أن يا إبراهيم قد صدقت الرؤيا
[As-Saffat 37:104-105]
