Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: ((We have revealed to you)) O Muhammad, ((the Book in truth)) attached to "revealed" ((so worship Allah, offering Him sincere religion))

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, We have revealed to you إنا أنزلنا إليك
[An-Nisa 4:105]
When He clarified that the revelation of the Book is from Allah, He clarified to whom it was revealed, saying: "
Indeed, We have revealed to you إنا أنزلنا إليك
[An-Nisa 4:105]
O Muhammad "
We revealedأنزلنا
The pronoun is plural, but when it refers to Allah, it is certainly not for plurality but for magnification. A Christian was confused by such a plural form and said: "Allah is the third of three," because Allah the Exalted mentions the pronoun referring to Him in the plural form, and the minimum for a plural is three. We say in response to him: This is from the deviation of the Christians
And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. فلما زاغوا أزاغ الله قلوبهم
[As-Saf 61:5]
they followed the ambiguous parts of the Qur'an. Had they referred this ambiguous part to the clear, decisive parts, they would have known that they are extremely wrong. This is because Allah explicitly stated in many verses that He is one God, saying:
And your God is one God, there is no god but He, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy وَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ
This is an explicit, clear, decisive text. As for
Narrated to usنا
which is the plural pronoun, in the Arabic language in which the Qur'an was revealed, it is suitable for both plurality and for one who magnifies himself. Thus, it is from the ambiguous, because if a word can carry two meanings, it is called ambiguous, and the ambiguous must be referred to what? To the clear, decisive.
Now, he said:
Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book إنا أنزلنا إليك الكتاب
[An-Nisa 4:105]
to youإليك
This is the goal, and the address is to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him),
the Book الكتاب
meaning the written one, which is the Qur'an, and the aspect of it being a Book has been mentioned previously, "
with the truth بالحق
attached to
revealedأنزل
"
with the truthبالحق
The preposition "ba" here is for contact and transitivity, meaning: that the Book itself was revealed in truth from Allah, not from anyone else,
We revealed أنزلنا
"in truth" means with certainty, that We revealed it to you from Us, and we also said: "ba" for transitivity, meaning that the Book was revealed in truth, i.e., that everything contained in the Qur'an is truth. So, on the first aspect, the meaning of "truth" is to confirm that it was revealed from Allah, and on the second aspect, the meaning is that everything contained in the Qur'an, whether news, commands, prohibitions, or otherwise, is truth. Is that clear? Thus,
with the truthبالحق
has two meanings:
The first meaning: that the Qur'an was revealed from Allah in truth, not in falsehood.
The second: that what is contained in the Qur'an is truth; commands, prohibitions, news, stories, all of it is truth.
Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth إنا أنزلنا إليك الكتاب بالحق
[An-Nisa 4:105]
He said: attached to
revealedأنزل
and he did not say attached to
We revealedأنزلنا
, because the attached thing is only attached to the verb, whereas
Narrated to usنا
is a pronoun outside the verb.
He said:
So worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion. فاعبد الله مخلصا له الدين
[Az-Zumar 39:2]
The "fa" is for branching, and the sign of the branching "fa" is that what comes after it is ordered based on what comes before it. So the meaning is: So, because of Our revealing the Book to you, worship Allah, offering Him sincere religion.
Worshipاعْبُد
The address is to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and his saying:
Sincerelyمخلصًا
is a state (hal) of the doer of
Worshipاعبد
, and the sincerity of a thing is its purification from impurities and the removal of what mixes with it. So, if one is sincere to Him in religion, the meaning is that you purify your religion from all shirk (associating partners with Allah). For this reason, the author said: "
[being] sincere to Him in religion. مُخْلِصًا له الدينَ
[Az-Zumar 39:2]
from shirk "
meaning, being a monotheist for Him, i.e., for Allah. And his saying:
To Him in religion له الدين
"religion" means action, and what is intended here is the specific action, which is worship, because of his saying:
So worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion. فاعبد الله مخلِصًا له الدين
[Az-Zumar 39:2]
and he did not say: "sincere to Him in worship," because religion is the action for which the doer seeks reward.
