The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: ((Say: "Indeed, I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the punishment of a great day."))

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
[Al-An'am 6:15]

Among its benefits is that it is necessary, indeed obligatory, for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to make this declaration to the people that he fears the punishment of a great day if he disobeys Allah. Its benefit is what we mentioned a moment ago: to follow his example in this, and to demonstrate the greatness of Allah and that He is worthy of being feared.
And among its benefits is the affirmation of the Last Day, as He said:
the punishment of a tremendous Day." عذابَ يومٍ عظيم
[Al-An'am 6:15]
.
Can it be inferred from this that disobedience is permissible for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? As He said:
if I disobey إن عصيت
But someone might say: there is a consideration here, because the evil may or may not come to pass, and its coming to pass may be impossible, like His saying:
Say, [O Muhammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."
[Az-Zukhruf 43:81]
and His saying to His Messenger:
(65) And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers." (66) Rather, worship [only] Allah ولقد أوحي اليك وإلى الذين من قبلك لئن أشركت ليحْبَطَنَّ عملك ولتكونن مِن الخاسرين * بل الله فاعبد
[Az-Zumar 39:65-66]
Yes, so there is a consideration in this benefit, because His saying:
if I disobey إن عصيت
does not indicate that disobedience will occur from him. But assuming it were to occur, "I fear." And someone might say: the fact that he fears is a confirmed matter, "I fear." And if it is a confirmed matter, then what it is contingent upon, which is disobedience, would be the same, meaning it is possible. That is, its meaning is: if I disobey, then I fear. In any case, it is established that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate to Allah to forgive him his sins, the first and the last. And it is established that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
O Allah, remove my sins from me as Thou hast removed the East from the West. O Allah purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from filth. O Allah! wash away my sins with snow, water, and ice.
Sahih Muslim 598a-b
.
And among the benefits of the noble verse is the magnification of the Day of Resurrection and that it is a great day. This entails that a person of intellect should fear it.
And among its benefits is the permissibility of describing other than Allah with greatness, as He said:
a great day يوم عظيم
And Allah the Exalted said of the Queen of Sheba:
and she has a great throne.
[An-Naml 27:23]
And He described falsehood as great, among other things. So describing other than Allah with greatness is not a problem, but absolute greatness belongs only to Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
