the patient and the truthful
Truthfulness is that which corresponds to reality; correspondence to reality is called truthfulness. So the truthful one is the one whose report corresponds to reality, and the liar? The opposite of that. Truthfulness is in speech, in action, with Allah, and with the servants of Allah. How many categories are there? Four: in speech, in action, with Allah, and with the servants of Allah. As for truthfulness in speech, it is the correspondence of speech to reality. So if he says to you, "Zayd has come," and he had indeed come, it corresponds to reality and is truthfulness. Truthfulness is among the characteristics of the believers, and lying is among the characteristics of the hypocrites. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) urged truthfulness and said:
Abide by truthfulness. For indeed truthfulness leads to righteousness. And indeed righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues telling the truth and trying hard to tell the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1971Sahih (Darussalam) The rank of the truthful (Siddiq) is not a low rank, but it is the one that follows the rank of the prophets. Therefore, the rank of the truthful is the second rank.
the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous
[An-Nisa 4:69]
Now, this is truthfulness in speech. Truthfulness in action: that it corresponds to the heart. This is truthfulness in action, that it corresponds to the heart. So a man who shows you affection while his heart hates you, is he truthful? No. A man who appears to be a believer, prays, gives charity, and attends gatherings of knowledge, but his heart is wrapped in disbelief—may Allah protect us from that—is he truthful? No, this is a liar with practical lying; he displayed the opposite of what he concealed. The two examples now are one with the servants and one with Allah. So the hypocrite is a liar with Allah, and the one who shows you affection while he hates you is a liar with people; he was not truthful with you. Now, the truthful ones in His saying:
the truthful
This includes both this and that: truthfulness in speech with Allah and with the servants of Allah. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) commanded truthfulness in His saying:
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
[At-Tawbah 9:119]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) urged it with great urging. What do the scholars of grammar call it? Urging (Ighra'), which is demanding with insistence and disturbance. He said:
Hold fast to truthfulness
And the outcome of the truthful is not hidden from you. Even if there were nothing else, there is that unique example, as far as we know, that occurred with Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), Hilal ibn Umayyah, and Murarah ibn Rabi' when they lagged behind the expedition to Tabuk without an excuse. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to the city, the superficial hypocrites came to excuse themselves to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he excused them, because he (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) does not know the unseen and does not take people except by their appearance. He excused them and sought forgiveness for them, and they thought they had gained something. They thought they were the clever ones who combined appeasing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and appeasing the disbelievers, so they became brothers to the Muslims in appearance and brothers to the disbelievers in reality.
when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones
[Al-Baqarah 2:14]
They did not say, "We have disbelieved." They said:
We are with you
Meaning their disbelief increased, meaning that they disbelieve and assist the disbelievers. Now, as for Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he was given good argument and opponents, but before whom was he? Not before a human being from whom he could escape by a trick, but before the Knower of the Unseen, (Mighty and Majestic), who, if he lied to Him today, would expose him tomorrow, as happened with the hypocrites. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them that you would leave them alone. So leave them alone; indeed they are evil; and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning.
Do you want something worse than this blame and this punishment?
Indeed, they are impure
This is the blame and the condemnation. The punishment:
and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning.
[At-Tawbah 9:95]
But he (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I will not escape by a trick today and with an excuse, for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will expose me tomorrow." And he informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the truth with truthfulness. So the rebuke from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) came, testing these three. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) boycotted them and ordered their boycott. After forty nights had passed, or forty nights, he ordered them to isolate themselves from their women. Until Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), when the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him ordering him to isolate himself from his family, said, "Should I divorce her?" He said, "No, but isolate yourself from her." Did he say, "By Allah, this is my wife; with whom should I sleep tonight?" Or did he say, "Go back to your family"? "Go back to your family." He said, "Hear and obey." So they endured this great patience, first in truthfulness and second in this boycott. Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I used to greet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I did not know whether he moved his lips to return the greeting or not? Allah is the Greatest—the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the best of people in character, the greatest in cheerfulness, and the best in returning greetings. Ka'b would greet him, and he did not know whether he returned the greeting or not. And he would greet Abu Qatadah, his maternal uncle, who was the most beloved of people to him. He would greet him, and Abu Qatadah would not return his greeting, even though if you came today with tribalism, would he leave his maternal uncle for such matters? Never, and knowledge is with Allah, he would not leave him. But Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), Ka'b would greet him, and he would not return the greeting. He says: "So I said to him, 'I invoke Allah upon you, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger?'" He said, after being silent for a moment, "Allah knows best." He did not give a response; he did not say yes or no. He said, "Allah knows best." And knowledge is with Allah that Abu Qatadah did not intend by that an answer to Ka'b, but rather the information that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, knows better than everyone. But after this great patience, what is the result? The result is the revelation of verses recited regarding them until the Day of Resurrection; their mention will never be forgotten. Perhaps someone better than them among the Companions might be forgotten, but these, their mention will not be forgotten. Look at the great reward for this patience.
And [He also forgave] the three who were left behind
[At-Tawbah 9:118]
Meaning, and He turned to the three who lagged behind.
to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness and their souls confined them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allah except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
Then He ordered the believers to be like them, to be like them, and He said:
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
[At-Tawbah 9:119]
And the important thing is that truthfulness is a great, high, and elevated character, which is not attained except by one whom Allah has guided, so that he is in the second rank of those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor.
A man continues telling the truth and trying hard to tell the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1971Sahih (Darussalam)I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan:
(17) The patient, the true, the obedient, those who spend [in the way of Allah], and those who seek forgiveness before dawn. (18) Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (19) Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allah, then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account.
[Ali 'Imran 3:17-19]
I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Allah the Exalted said in describing those who fear their Lord, and those who
will be gardens in the presence of their Lord beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and approval from Allah. And Allah is Seeing of [His] servants -
[Ali 'Imran 3:15]
