The questioner : He says in his letter: A man who loves his parents and wants to follow the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) grew his beard and found annoyance from his father and mother until they became angry with him. What is the ruling in Islam regarding this? Should he anger his parents or grow his beard?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions. As for what follows, there is no doubt that the pleasure of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) takes precedence over the pleasure of anyone else, and obedience to Allah (Exalted is He) takes precedence over obedience to anyone else.
A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the "Creator.” ولا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالق
Mishkat al-Masabih 3696
For this reason, Allah the Exalted said regarding the parents, addressing the child:
(14) And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. (15) But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
[Luqman 31:14-15]
In this verse, there is evidence that it is not permissible for a person to obey his parents in disobedience to Allah (Exalted is He). So when Allah guided you—and I ask Allah for firmness for me and for you upon His guidance—when He guided you to the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) by growing the beard, and you found annoyance from your parents, I advise you to be patient and to count this annoyance as a reward, and to continue following the Shari'ah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his guidance, even if your parents become angry for it. And I advise your parents, your mother and your father, to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and to be a help to their son in obeying Allah, rather than being those who drive him away from obeying Allah (Exalted is He) with this annoyance. And I say to them: The favor of Allah upon your son in adhering to the Shari'ah is a share of your own and part of your success. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a person dies, all action is cut off for him with the exception of three things: sadaqa which continues, knowledge which benefits, or a righteous child who makes supplication for him. إذا مات العبد انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به من بعده، أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 38
So my advice to you, O parents, is to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and to encourage your son, as well as all your other children, to obey Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And consider this a blessing from Allah upon you, so thank Allah for this blessing and continue to encourage your children to obey Allah (Exalted is He).
