Obedience to the Parent in What Is Good

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The brother R. A. M. from the Arab Republic of Egypt, after greeting your Eminence, asks about the actions of his father that contradict the Shari'ah and its etiquettes, and what is obligatory for him toward his father in this situation?

A: And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings:
After that: We ask Allah for guidance for your father and that He bestow upon him repentance. We advise you to be gentle with him and to counsel him in a good manner, and not to despair of his guidance, due to the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
[Luqman 31:14]
And if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness, and follow the way of those who turn back to Me the verse [Luqman: 14-15]. So He, the Exalted, advised giving thanks to the parents along with giving thanks to Him, and He commanded the son to accompany them in this world with kindness, even if they strive to make him disbelieve in Allah. By this, you know that what is prescribed for you is to accompany your father with kindness, to be good to him even if he is bad to you, and to strive in calling him to the truth, so that perhaps Allah will guide him through your means.
It is not permissible for you to obey him in disobedience. We also advise you to seek help in guiding him through Allah , then through the people of good among your relatives, such as your uncles and others whom your father respects and esteems, so that perhaps he will accept their advice. We ask Allah for guidance for us, for you, and for him, and success for sincere repentance. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
