The reader: In the name of Allah, and praise is to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon His servant and our Prophet Muhammad.
The Shaykh : May Allah send prayers and peace upon him.
The reader: And upon his family and all his Companions.
The Shaykh of Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book al-Iqtida':
"And as for the detailed answer, we say: The crux of this doubt rests on two principles: transmitted: which is what is reported of the practice of this supplication by some notable figures.
And rational: which is what is believed of its benefit through experience and syllogisms.
As for the transmission in this matter: it is either a lie, or an error, or not a proof; rather, we have mentioned the transmission from those who are to be followed, to the contrary of that".
The student: ...
The Shaykh : This phrase was previously changed...
The reader: "And as for the rational, we say: Most of the mentioned benefits are lies"
The Shaykh : Either a lie, which is that a person intentionally lies in the transmission, or an error, by adding or subtracting or advancing or delaying, or not a proof, by its transmission being as it is but from one whose statement is not a proof. Yes.
The reader: "And as for the rational, we say: Most of the mentioned benefits are lies, for those"
The Shaykh :"Rather, we have mentioned", the rule we gave you, when we speak about a section of the book, we start directly from after it, because the speech makes one forget what came before, "Rather, we have mentioned", "or not a proof, rather, we have mentioned".
The reader: "Rather, we have mentioned the transmission from those who are to be followed, to the contrary of that"
The Shaykh : So, it means if it is established that it is transmitted, there is a clear contradiction? Okay.
The reader: "And as for the rational, we say: Most of the mentioned benefits are lies, for those who seek supplication at graves and their like, they are only answered in the rare case, and a man among them supplicates as much as Allah wills of supplications, and he is answered in one, and many of them supplicate, and one after another is answered, and where is this compared to those who seek supplication at the hours of the late night, and they supplicate to Allah in their prostrations and after their prayers, and in the houses of Allah, for these, if they supplicate of the same kind as the supplication of those at graves, hardly does a supplication of theirs drop except due to a preventer, rather, the reality is that the supplication which those at graves perform, if the sincere ones perform it, the sincere ones are not answered except rarely, and those at graves are not answered except rarely, and the sincere ones, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said".
The Shaykh : So, if these are not answered except rarely, and these do not have their supplication drop except rarely, which group is more deserving? The one whose supplication does not drop except rarely. So instead of going to the graveyard, go to one of the houses of Allah. Allah is the Helper. Yes.
The reader: "And the sincere ones, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:. So they are in their supplication continually in good.
And as for those at graves, if they are answered rarely, then one of them weakens his tawhid (the oneness of Allah), and his share from his Lord decreases, and he does not find in his heart of the taste of faith and its sweetness what the foremost ones who were first found. And perhaps he is hardly blessed in his need, may Allah forgive them for their lack of knowledge that that is a bid'ah (religious innovation), for if the mujtahid (a scholar qualified to derive rulings) errs, Allah rewards him for his ijtihad (independent legal reasoning) and forgives him his error.
And all matters that are thought to have an effect in the world and are forbidden in the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law), such as astronomical calculations".
The Shaykh : Such as mixtures with the letter zay.
The reader: He says: mixtures, and perhaps it is more correct with the letter ra.
The Shaykh : Perhaps?
The reader: In A or T: mixtures, and perhaps it is more correct with the letter ra. And astronomical calculations are taken from the word "marj" which means mixing, corruption, disorder, and anxiety. And perhaps the intention here is the conjectures of the astronomers and those who believe that the celestial bodies have an effect and their mixing in that. And mixtures also means mixing and what the body is arranged with of natures.
With the letter ra and not the letter zay?
The Shaykh : A second copy.
The reader: It is what he said, a copy, meaning he investigated, he did not say it is a copy, he says perhaps it is with the letter ra.
The Shaykh : With the letter ra?
The reader: He says perhaps it is more correct with the letter ra.
The Shaykh : No, and even mixtures is very sound.
The Shaykh : May Allah send prayers and peace upon him.

There is no servant who supplicates to Allah with a supplication in which there is no sin nor severing of family ties, except that Allah gives him one of three things: either Allah hastens his supplication for him, or He stores for him of good the like of it, or He averts from him of evil the like of it. They said: O Messenger of Allah, then we will multiply. He said: Allah is more.
And as for those at graves, if they are answered rarely, then one of them weakens his tawhid (the oneness of Allah), and his share from his Lord decreases, and he does not find in his heart of the taste of faith and its sweetness what the foremost ones who were first found.
