Reading from the author's text with commentary and collation of manuscripts: "And the intended meaning here

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "And the intended meaning here is that the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking refuge in Allah's pardon and His healing from His punishment — even though one does not seek refuge in a created being — is like asking Allah by His answering and His rewarding, even though one does not ask by a created being.
And if a scholar says: one does not ask except by Him, that does not contradict asking by His attributes, just as swearing is not prescribed except by Allah, as established in the authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Whoever has to take an oath should swear by Allah or remain silent. من كان حالفا فليحلف بالله أو ليصمت
Sahih al-Bukhari 2679
, and in a wording of al-Tirmidhi:
He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk من حلف بغير الله فقد كفر أو أشرك
Riyad as-Salihin 1711
Al-Tirmidhi said: A good hadith, and despite this "
.

The Shaykh : Pay attention to his saying: it does not contradict asking by what? By His attributes. He did not say it does not contradict asking for His attributes, because asking for the attributes is shirk (associating partners with Allah). If a person asked the attribute, he would be a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah) because he believes that the attribute is a thing that exists in itself, that answers, benefits, and harms. And this is shirk.
So there is a difference between asking Allah by His attributes and asking His attributes. And the Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) reported the consensus that asking the attribute is shirk, and he spoke the truth (may Allah have mercy on him). The attribute is not something that exists in itself, that benefits and harms.
And as for
‘O Living, O Self-Sustaining Sustainer! In Your Mercy do I seek relief (Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, bi-raḥmatika astaghīth).’ يا حي يا قيوم برحمتك أستغيث
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3524Hasan (Darussalam)
, this is tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) to Allah by mercy, meaning: because You are the Merciful, I seek refuge in Your mercy. The meaning is not that mercy is what one seeks refuge in, but this is from the category of what? From the category of tawassul. Even the supplicant says: "By Your mercy I seek refuge." Does he feel at that moment that mercy is what saves him, or that the Merciful is what saves him? That the Merciful, without doubt.
Did he finish?
The student: Time for questions.

The Shaykh : No, it did not come.
The reader: "And in a wording of al-Tirmidhi:
He who swears by anyone but Allah is polytheist. من حلف بغير الله فقد أشرك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3251Sahih (Al-Albani)
Al-Tirmidhi said: A good hadith, and despite this, swearing by Allah's might, by the life of Allah, and the like of what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) swearing by, did not fall under swearing by other than Allah, because the term "other" may be intended to mean the distinct and separate "
