Is it possible to pray two obligatory prayers with a single dry ablution, given that the two obligatory prayers are within the same time?

The questioner : The Sudanese listener asks: Is it possible to pray two obligatory prayers with a single dry ablution, given that the two obligatory prayers are within the same time, one being a make-up prayer and the other a current one? And is it possible to pray an obligatory prayer and a recommended practice with a single dry ablution? For example, the night prayer with the even-numbered and odd-numbered night prayers. We ask for guidance on this?

The Shaykh : Yes. You may pray two obligatory prayers with a single dry ablution, whether you pray them at the same time or you pray each one in its own time. You may also pray an obligatory prayer and its regular voluntary prayer, or an obligatory prayer and another recommended practice. You may also perform dry ablution for a recommended practice and pray an obligatory prayer with it. This is because dry ablution is a substitute for the purity of water, and the substitute has the ruling of the thing it substitutes. Purity is achieved through dry ablution. The evidence for this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
This is evidence that dry ablution purifies. And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
the earth has been made for me a place of worship and a means of purification. جعِلت لي الأرض مسجدا وطهورا
Sunan Ibn Majah 567Sahih (Darussalam)
"Purity is that by which one purifies himself," which is evidence that dry ablution purifies. If it purifies, then when a person performs dry ablution, purity is established for him and the state of ritual impurity is lifted from him. He remains in a state of purity until a new state of ritual impurity occurs for him. Accordingly, if you performed dry ablution for the dawn prayer and did not become ritually impure until the time for the midday prayer arrived, and you prayed the midday prayer with the dry ablution of the dawn prayer, your prayer would be valid because the purity remains. If you remained in your state of purity until the afternoon prayer and you also prayed the afternoon prayer, there is no blame on you and your prayer is valid. If you remained until the sunset and night prayers and you prayed the sunset and night prayers with the dry ablution that was for the dawn prayer, there is no blame on you in that, because the purity of dry ablution is not nullified except by what nullifies the purity of water. The purity of water is not nullified by the passing of the time, so the purity of dry ablution is the same. However, the purity of dry ablution is nullified by the presence of water. If you find water, it is obligatory for you to perform ablution if you wish to pray, and to perform the full ritual bath from major ritual impurity if you had performed dry ablution for it in the absence of water. You perform the full ritual bath when you find water and then pray.
The evidence for this is what al-Bukhari narrated from the long hadith of Abu Sa'id, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed with his Companions and saw a man standing apart who had not prayed with the people. He asked him why he had not prayed with them. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was in a state of major ritual impurity and there was no water." He said:
Perform Tayammum with clean earth and that will be sufficient for you. عليك بالصعيد فإنه يكفيك
Sahih al-Bukhari 348
Then water was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he gave it to the man and said:
Take this and pour it over yourself خذ هذا أفرغه على نفسك
This is evidence that whenever a person finds water, even if he is in a state of dry ablution, it is obligatory for him to purify himself with it, whether that is for minor or major ritual impurity. As long as he is deprived of water, the purity of the earth takes the place of the purity of water in every respect. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
