He said: "And from him" means from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "A man among us freed a slave of his in exchange for sexual intercourse, and he had no wealth other than him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for him and sold him." Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
His statement: "Freed" What is freeing? In its original sense, the term is used for several meanings: it is used for the ancient, as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House. ثمّ محلّها إلى البيت العتيق
[Al-Hajj 22:33]
meaning the ancient, because it is the first house established for people. It is also used for the excellent, such as the fine camels, meaning their best ones. It is also used for the emancipation of a slave, which is the intended meaning here. Emancipating a slave means releasing him from slavery; when a person is a slave and his master frees him, it is said that he freed him.
And freeing a slave is among the best of deeds, for whoever frees a slave, Allah frees him from the Fire with every limb, even the private part with the private part. For this reason, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) made it an expiation for great sins, such as killing, zihar, intercourse during Ramadan, and breaking an oath.
It has many forms, among which is saying to him, "You are free," using the verbal formula. Another form is when a partner frees his share, in which case the freedom extends to the other partner's share. Another form is if he maims his slave; if he maims his slave, meaning, for example, cuts off one of his fingers or a toe, then he is forcibly freed.
