Explanation of the Book: The Beginning of Revelation, Faith, and Knowledge-02b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, saying: Shu'ayb informed us from al-Zuhri, saying: Abu Daris, 'A'idh Allah ibn 'Abd Allah, informed me that 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), who had witnessed Badr and was one of the chiefs on the night of al-'Aqabah, said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, with a group of his Companions around him:
"Swear allegiance to me for: 1. Not to join anything in worship along with Allah. 2. Not to steal. 3. Not to commit illegal sexual intercourse. 4. Not to kill your children. 5. Not to accuse an innocent person (to spread such an accusation among people). 6. Not to be disobedient (when ordered) to do good deed." The Prophet (ﷺ) added: "Whoever among you fulfills his pledge will be rewarded by Allah. And whoever indulges in any one of them (except the ascription of partners to Allah) and gets the punishment in this world, that punishment will be an expiation for that sin. And if one indulges in any of them, and Allah conceals his sin, it is up to Him to forgive or punish him (in the Hereafter)."
Sahih al-Bukhari 18
So we pledged allegiance to him on that.

The Shaykh : Pledging allegiance is shaking hands, because it is derived from al-ba' (the arm), and it was the custom that they would pledge allegiance by extending the hand, as Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you, [O Muhammad] - they are actually pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands.
[Al-Fath 48:10]
.
And this pledge is called the pledge of the women, because Allah the Exalted said:
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allah
[Al-Mumtahanah 60:12]
to the end of it.
And in His saying:
Not to be disobedient (when ordered) to do good deed.
Sahih al-Bukhari 18
, and He did not say "do not disobey me," because that is more comprehensive, meaning do not disobey Allah and do not disobey me.
And His saying:
in what is right في معروف
, let no one suppose that it has a converse meaning, which would be: "and disobey me in what is wrong," because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cannot possibly command what is wrong. But this restriction is to clarify the reality and the situation, which is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) does not command except what is right.
And similar to this is His saying, the Exalted:
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life
[Al-Anfal 8:24]
Does it have a converse meaning? Meaning: and if He calls you to what does not give you life, do not answer Him?
No, but it is to clarify the reality and the situation, which is that He does not call you except to what gives you life.
And similar to that is also His saying, the Exalted:
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you
[Al-Baqarah 2:21]
"Worship your Lord who created you." Does it have a converse meaning, meaning: and do not worship your Lord who did not create you? Answer.
The students: No.

The Shaykh : No, but this is to clarify the reality and the situation, meaning He is the one who created you.
And this is a matter that a student of knowledge should pay attention to, and this restriction is called by the scholars the revealing restriction, meaning the revealing attribute that clarifies the reality and the situation.
And His saying, may the prayer and peace be upon him:
And whoever indulges in any one of them (except the ascription of partners to Allah) and gets the punishment in this world, that punishment will be an expiation for that sin.
Sahih al-Bukhari 18
, the scholars derived from this that the hudud (fixed punishments) are an expiation for sins, meaning that if a person commits unlawful sexual intercourse and the hadd is established against him, that is an expiation for him, as long as he does not commit unlawful sexual intercourse again. If he commits unlawful sexual intercourse again, he needs repentance or an expiation.
And His saying:
was punished for it in this world
, this encompasses the bodily punishment that is from the action of creation, such as the hudud and ta'zir (discretionary punishments), as well as the spiritual punishment or the bodily punishment that is from Allah; all of it is punishment. Allah the Exalted said:
And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:30]
.
He said:
And if one indulges in any of them, and Allah conceals his sin, it is up to Him to forgive or punish him (in the Hereafter).
Sahih al-Bukhari 18
So we pledged allegiance to him on that. This generality is not intended, because His saying:
Of these من ذلك
refers to what came before, and among that is associating partners with Allah. Associating partners with Allah does not fall under this expression. Why?
Because Allah says:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills
[An-Nisa 4:48]
, so it is derived from this that the texts may come in a general form, but only some of the individuals of the generality are intended, not all of them. This is called by some jurists or by some specialists in the principles of jurisprudence the general that is intended as the specific.
And in this hadith there is also evidence that the doer of sins may be concealed or may be exposed, which is the reality. Indeed, a person may be concealed by Allah, and he may commit many sins and no one may know about them. And he may commit sins and people may sometimes know about them, they may perceive it from his state, his face, and his actions. And sometimes he himself speaks, even if he did not choose to, saying that he did such and such.
And no person commits a sin except that Allah exposes it, as Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "except that Allah the Exalted [exposes it] on the pages of his face and the slips of his tongue". He may slip up and say a word that indicates what happened of the sin. For this reason, a person should always frequently seek forgiveness from Allah, asking for pardon. Yes.
