Explanation of the Book of the Beginning of Revelation, Faith, and Knowledge-07a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abu al-Nu'man 'Aram ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Uwanah narrated to us from Abu Bashir from Yusuf ibn Mayhik, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, who said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delayed from us on a journey we took, and we caught up with him when the time for prayer had pressed upon us while we were performing ablution. We began wiping over our feet, and he called out at the top of his voice, "Woe to the heels from the Fire," twice or three times.
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The author has made this a chapter on raising the voice with knowledge, or on one who raises his voice with knowledge. He cited as evidence the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Woe to the heels because of Hell-fire.
Sunan Ibn Majah 453Sahih (Darussalam)
He raised his voice with this, may peace and blessings be upon him, because the Companions did not wash their feet, but rather wiped over them. From this, one derives what al-Bukhari indicated regarding raising the voice with knowledge, because the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Woe to the heels because of Hell-fire.
Sunan Ibn Majah 453Sahih (Darussalam)
is knowledge, by which he informed the community. Branching from this benefit is what is used today in loudspeakers, for that is undoubtedly a means of raising the voice with knowledge, and thus it is praiseworthy. Among the benefits of this hadith is that wiping does not suffice in place of washing, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threatened those who wipe with this:
Woe to the heels because of Hell-fire.
Sunan Ibn Majah 453Sahih (Darussalam)
Does wiping suffice in place of washing if a person washes his head in ablution instead of wiping it? On this, the scholars have two opinions. Those who said it suffices stated that it is disliked to wash it instead of wiping it. Those who said it does not suffice stated that it is because he performed an act for which there is no command from Allah and His Messenger, so it is rejected, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718b
And there is no doubt that one who washes his head instead of wiping it, if he did so out of a desire to abandon the Sunnah, his act is undoubtedly invalid and he is also in danger, a danger that his act may lead to disbelief, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me
Sahih Muslim 1401
And because this is a desire to abandon his Sunnah and to legislate something else. As for one who did that not out of a desire to abandon the Sunnah, there is hesitation regarding its sufficiency. You have known the evidence of those who said it does not suffice. Those who said it suffices with dislike said that wiping the feet was legislated as a concession for the servants, so if he washes it, that is the original method of purifying the limbs. However, there is no doubt that the person who wipes it instead of washing it is in danger, and the least that can be said about it is that it is disliked, as the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them) mentioned.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Yes, the one who washes his head instead of wiping it is in danger, and the least that can be said about it is that it is disliked. Yes.

The questioner : Shaykh, what is the basis for the opinion of those who say ... he passes his hands?

The Shaykh : Yes, those who say that when he passes his hands, they say this is wiping.

The questioner : It is true of him.

The Shaykh : And it is true of him that it is wiping. Yes.
