Among the benefits of this noble verse is the clarification of the formula the angels use in seeking forgiveness for the believers: they first seek nearness to Allah through a means, and then they make their request: [Ghafir 40:7].
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the vastness of Allah’s mercy, as He said:[Ghafir 40:7] If someone were to ask: How is that possible, when most of the children of Adam are disbelievers? Where is the mercy? We say: They are recipients of the general mercy. Who causes plants to grow for them? Who sends down rain for them? Who keeps them healthy? Who blesses them with hearing and sight? It is none but Allah. This is mercy. So the mercy of Allah encompasses all things.
Among its benefits is the vastness of Allah’s knowledge, as He said: These two benefits lead to the fact that when a person knows this, he exposes himself to the mercy of Allah, hoping to be among those who enter into it. And when he believes in the vastness of Allah’s knowledge, he feels ashamed before Allah of being found where He commanded him not to be, or being found where He forbade him to be. Now, if your father were to say to you: “My son, do not do such-and-such,” would you do it if he were absent and you had a desire for it? You would certainly do it, because he does not know about you. But if he were watching you, you would not do it. Allah the Mighty and Majestic is not absent from you. So do not do it, neither in secret nor in public, if it is something Allah has forbidden. And do not leave it if it is something He has commanded. For this reason, we say: May Allah not find you where He commanded you, and may He not find you where He forbade you.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the virtue of repentance, for the angels linked their request for forgiveness to it, saying:.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that the realization of repentance includes following the path of Allah, as He said: For this reason, we find that Allah the Exalted always pairs the mention of repentance with the mention of righteous deeds: [Al-Furqan 25:70] Good.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the virtue of Islam, due to its attribution to Allah the Mighty and Majestic.
Among its benefits is the perfection of Islam, due to its attribution to Allah. It has virtue due to its attribution to Allah, in that it is a means leading to Him. And it has perfection due to its attribution to Allah, in that He is the One who established it. He is the One who legislated it, and He is perfect, and the Perfect One does not legislate anything but what is perfect. Good.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that the angels emphasized forgiveness by mentioning its effect, which is their saying:[Ghafir 40:7] This is because repentance does not occur except through protection from the Blazing Fire. However, they emphasized this because of the greatness of this punishment, the punishment of the Blazing Fire, so they specified it for this reason. Otherwise, repentance and forgiveness in reality necessitate protection from the punishment of the Blazing Fire. But specifying it adds to what is included in the general meaning.
Can the refutation of the Jabriyyah be derived from this verse? From His saying: He attributed the following to them. If they had been compelled to do so, it would not be valid to attribute the action to them. For this reason, if a person is forced into disbelief, he is not considered a disbeliever, because the action is not truly attributed to him; he is compelled to it. And Allah knows best.
Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented
