to Him
إليه
That is, to Allah alone. We said “alone” because of the fronting of the object. Fronting the object implies restriction, for the object’s proper place is after the verb. If it is fronted, it falls under the category of fronting what is properly delayed. The linguistic and rhetorical rule is that fronting what is properly delayed implies restriction. Accordingly, regarding His saying:
To Him returns
إليه يرد
We say: The meaning is: to Him, not to anyone else. And from where did we take this negation, “not to anyone else”?
not to anyone else
لا إلى غيره
From the fronting of the object, because the object’s proper place is after the verb. If it is fronted, this is from the category of fronting what is properly delayed, and fronting what is properly delayed implies restriction. This is a linguistic and rhetorical rule.
is referred back
يُرَّد
That is, the knowledge of the Hour is referred back
knowledge of the Hour
علم الساعة
The commentator said:
“When it is” then he said:
“No one else knows it” He took this restriction, “no one else knows it,”
no one else knows it
لا يعلمها غيره
from the fronting of the object, which is
to Him
إليه
. And there is no doubt that no one knows when the Hour will occur except Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). For this reason, Allah the Exalted said:
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival? Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord.
يسئلونك عن الساعة أيان مرساها قل إنما علمها عند ربي [Al-A'raf 7:187]
meaning, its knowledge is only with my Lord.
None will reveal its time except Him
لا يجلِّيها لوقتها إلا هو [Al-A'raf 7:187]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, when Jibril asked him:
Inform me when the Hour is?
أخبرني متى الساعة؟
He said:
The one who is asked about it does not know more than the one who is asking
ما المسئولُ عنها بأعلم من السائل Sunan Ibn Majah 4044Sahih (Darussalam) meaning, I have no knowledge of it, just as you have no knowledge of it. Accordingly, whoever claims knowledge of the Hour is a liar, without doubt. And he is also a disbeliever, because he is denying the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
To him [alone] is attributed knowledge of the Hour. And fruits emerge not from their coverings
إليه يرد علم الساعة وما تخرج من ثمرات من أكمامها [Fussilat 41:47]
His saying:
and what fruit comes out
وما تخرج
It may appear to a person that
not
ما
is a relative pronoun, meaning: and the knowledge of what comes out of fruits from their sheaths is referred back to Him. But this is an illusion. Accordingly, we say:
not
ما
is a negation.
“and what fruit comes out
وما تخرج من ثمرة
And in a reading, fruits
ثمرات
” The author interpreted based on the reading of
fruit
ثمرة
(singular), and the reading before us in the Mushaf is
from fruits
مِن ثمراتٍ
. Know that the author (may Allah have mercy on him) has a convention: when he says “and in a reading,” it is one of the seven canonical readings. When he says “and it was read,” it is an anomalous reading, not from the seven. This is the convention of al-Jalalayn (may Allah have mercy on him). So, in the reading
fruits
ثمرات
, this reading is one of the seven, meaning it is established and permissible to recite it in prayer, and it serves as proof in legal rulings and scholarly reports. As for the plural form, it is clear:
from fruits
من ثمرات
all fruits. And as for the singular form, it also implies generality, because
fruit
ثمرة
is an indefinite noun in the context of negation, emphasized by the extra
from
مِن
, so it includes all fruits. Accordingly, there is no difference in meaning between “fruits” and “fruit.”
and what fruit comes out
وما تخرج من ثمرة
And in a reading,
fruits
ثمرات
from their sheaths
مِن أكمامها
“You have contained them” The sheaths are the containers. He says:
“The plural of kimm
كِمّ
— with a kasrah on the kaf — except by His knowledge” The sheaths are the containers of the date clusters. This is well known in palm trees, and it is also well known in flowers. You find a covering on the flower, and this is called a *kum*. So, no fruit comes out of its sheath except by the knowledge of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Any fruit, whether small or large, edible or not, is by the knowledge of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The aspect of it being by His knowledge is that these fruits are created by Allah, and every creation of Allah is known to Him, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?
ألا يعلم من خلق وهو اللطيف الخبير [Al-Mulk 67:14]
So, whenever you affirm that Allah is the Creator of these, it follows from your affirmation that Allah is knowledgeable of them, because it is not possible for Him to create them while not knowing them. For this reason, Allah provided a rational proof:
Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?
ألا يعلم من خلق وهو اللطيف الخبير [Al-Mulk 67:14]
,
And fruits emerge not from their coverings nor does a female conceive or give birth except with His knowledge
وما تخرج من ثمرات من أكمامها ولا تحمل من أنثى ولا تضع إلا بعلمه [Fussilat 41:47]
no female conceives
ما تحمل من أنثى [Fatir 35:11]
That is, no female, whether from the children of Adam or from animals, carries or delivers except by the knowledge of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The beginning of pregnancy is known to Allah, and its delivery is also known to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). We return to His saying:
from any female
من أنثى
and to His saying:
from fruit
من ثمرة
The grammatical analysis:
from
مِن
is a preposition.
