The Ruling on Breaking the Fast for a Pregnant or Nursing Woman

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible for a pregnant or nursing woman to break her fast? And is it obligatory for them to make up the fasts, or is there an expiation for breaking their fasts?

Answer: The ruling for the pregnant and nursing woman is the same as the ruling for the sick person. If fasting is difficult for them, it is prescribed for them to break the fast, and it is obligatory for them to make up the fasts when they are able to do so, just as with the sick person.
Some scholars have held that it is sufficient for them to feed a poor person for each day, but this is a weak and weaker position.
The correct view is that it is obligatory for them to make up the fasts, just as with the traveler and the sick person; based on the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He): :
So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[al-Baqarah:184]. Also, the hadith of Anas ibn Malik al-Ka'bi indicates this: that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, Allah has relieved the traveler of fasting and half of the prayer, and the pregnant and nursing woman of fasting.إن الله وضع عن المسافر الصوم وشطر الصلاة، وعن الحبلى والمرضع الصوم
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 5:140
It was narrated by the five.
