Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: The brother / A. A. from Indonesia says in his question: Is it permissible to perform 'Umrah on behalf of a deceased person? And is it permissible for me to perform 'Umrah on behalf of my father, who is still alive, because he is unable to do so?

Answer: It is permissible to perform 'Umrah and Hajj on behalf of a deceased person if he was a Muslim, and likewise it is permissible to perform 'Umrah and Hajj on behalf of a living Muslim if he is unable to do so due to old age or an illness from which recovery is not expected, whether it is your father, your mother, or someone else. This is based on what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that a man asked him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my father is an old man who cannot perform Hajj or travel. Should I perform Hajj and 'Umrah on his behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Perform Hajj on behalf of your father and perform Umrah.حج عن أبيك واعتمر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 930Sahih (Darussalam)
It is agreed upon that it is authentic. It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that a woman from Khath'am asked him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my father is an old man who cannot stay on the mount. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Perform Hajj on behalf of your father.حجي عن أبيك
It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
