The Ruling on the Expiation for One Who Delays Making Up Fasts Due to Inability

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Our father, the Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him from all evil), amen.
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that:
So I am sending you two questions, hoping you will be generous in answering them, and peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
My wife broke her fast for (6) days of Ramadan and became pregnant, and up to now she has not fasted these six days. She will give birth in the coming Ramadan and she is breastfeeding the child. What is the ruling, and when should she fast the six days? Does she owe an expiation?

Answer: And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
She has to make up the days she broke from Ramadan when she is able, even if it is after the other Ramadan, and she owes no expiation. If the delay was due to an excuse of inability, but if she was negligent, then she must repent, make up the fasts, and pay the expiation, which is feeding one poor person for each day, the amount being half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) by the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the staple food of the land, whether wheat, rice, or otherwise, and the amount is approximately one and a half kilograms.
