Explanation of the statement of Ibn Malik (may Allah have mercy on him): The locative object, which is called a *zarf* (adverbial noun).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The locative object, which is called a *zarf*". Which of the objects did we cover previously?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : What?
The student: The object for the sake of which.

The Shaykh : And the absolute object, and the object with which. The object with which came before the transitivity of the verb and its necessity; the transitivity of the verb and its necessity came before the object with which. And the five objects, as we mentioned to you in the *Shabrawiyyah* poem, which is called the *Shabrawiyyah*. Who can recite two verses from it for us?
The student: "The objects are five: absolute, with which *** for the sake of which, with it"

The Shaykh :"and in it"
The student: "... *** and in it, with it, for the sake of which, and look at the example"

The Shaykh : The examples.
The student: "I struck a blow at Abu 'Amr on the day he came *** and I traveled along the Nile, fearing your punishment of me"

The Shaykh : Good, well done. This is the locative object. He said: "which is called a *zarf*", meaning: grammarians call it a *zarf*. A *zarf* is that which is a container for something. Every person is in a *zarf* of time and place, correct or not? Every person is in a *zarf* of time and place. As for time, it is obvious, and place is obvious. You are in the house, or in the mosque, or in the market. But what about the one who flies in the air, is he in a place?
The student: In the air.

The Shaykh : In the air and in the airplane as well. The place is the airplane. Yes, so every person is in a time and in a place.
