Question: A woman entered the state of ihram for 'Umrah, then menstruation began, so she took off her ihram clothes, canceled the 'Umrah, and traveled. What is the ruling?
Answer: This woman remains under the ruling of ihram, and taking off the clothes she entered ihram in does not remove her from the ruling of ihram. She has to return to Makkah to complete her 'Umrah. She owes no expiation for taking off her clothes or for cutting any of her nails or hair, and for returning to her country, if she was ignorant of the ruling. However, if she has a husband and he has intercourse with her before she returns to perform the rites of 'Umrah, then she invalidates her 'Umrah by that. But it is obligatory for her to perform the rites of 'Umrah even though it is invalid, and then she must make it up with another 'Umrah from the miqat from which she entered ihram for the first one. In addition to that, she owes a fidyah, which is one-seventh of a camel or one-seventh of a cow, or a head of sheep—whether a one-year-old or a two-year-old—slaughtered in the Makkah Haram and distributed among the poor in the Haram, as an expiation for invalidating her 'Umrah through intercourse.
A woman may enter ihram in whatever clothes she wishes, and there are no specific clothes for ihram, as some of the common people think. However, it is better for her that the ihram clothes not be beautiful, so that no fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) arises from them. And Allah knows best.
