Hijab in the Presence of a Daughter’s Husband

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: I am a woman with eight daughters, and four of them are married. As for two of them, I observe hijab in the presence of their husbands, while for the other two, I remove my hijab in the presence of their husbands. I ask you to provide guidance: Is there any sin on me for this, and is hijab permissible or not?

Answer: The husbands of your daughters are mahram (relatives one may not marry) to you, so there is no blame on you for uncovering in their presence what is customary, such as the face, hands, and feet. This is not obligatory, but it is the prescribed practice; based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Take to the concession which Allah has granted youعليكم برخصة الله التي رخص لكم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2258Sahih (Darussalam)
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allah the Most High loves that His permissions be practicedإن الله يحب أن تؤتى رخصه
Bulugh al-Maram 2:341
. Also, because observing hijab in their presence is contrary to the Shari'ah and causes estrangement and hatred, what should be done is to leave it off and act according to the legal dispensation. Uncovering for some of them and not for others leads to suspicion and questioning and causes estrangement and distress, so the prescribed practice is to leave it off, or to uncover for all of them.
