The virtue of hastening to marriage
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: The girl’s salary, her job, and the suitor’s financial and social status, as well as studying the prospective bride, all of these can sometimes be reasons for delaying marriage. So how do you direct people in this matter, if you please?
Answer: It is obligatory to hasten to marriage. A young man should not delay marriage for the sake of study, and a young woman should not delay marriage for study; for marriage does not prevent any of that. It is possible for a young man to marry, preserve his religion and his character, and lower his gaze, while continuing his studies. Likewise, if Allah makes it easy for a young woman to find a suitable match, she should hasten to marriage even if she is studying, whether in secondary school or in higher education; none of that prevents it.
So it is obligatory to hasten and to agree to marriage when a suitable suitor proposes, and study does not prevent that.
Even if she cuts back on her studies somewhat, there is nothing wrong with that. The important thing is that she learns what she needs to know about her religion; the rest is a benefit.
Marriage has many benefits, especially in this age; and there is harm in delaying it for the young woman and for the young man.
So it is obligatory for every young man and every young woman to hasten to marriage when a suitable suitor is available for the woman. And when a good prospective bride is available for the young man, let him hasten; acting in accordance with the saying of the noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:Mishkat al-Masabih 3080 It is agreed upon as authentic.
This applies to young men and young women alike, and is not specific to men; rather, it encompasses everyone, and they are all in need of marriage.
We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.

Young man, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from looking at strange women and preserves you from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting, for it is a means of suppressing sexual desire.
