The Ruling on Early Marriage and the Appropriate Age for Marriage
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner from the Arab Republic of Egypt—Your Eminence, the Shaykh—says: What is the ruling in the Shari'ah, in your view, Your Eminence, regarding early marriage? And what is the appropriate age for marriage for a girl and a boy?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 3080 So, early marriage is better if it is facilitated, and one should be prompt in it; because a person, once he reaches puberty, is exposed to error. So, it is prescribed for him to be prompt—if he is able—prompt in marriage—once he reaches puberty. If he reaches fifteen years of age or more, and if he reaches it before that and feels his need for women before fifteen, if he reaches it by the emission of semen; there is no harm in him marrying.
The point is: if he reaches puberty, even if not at fifteen, and he is able to marry, it is prescribed for him to be prompt.
And so with the girl, if she reaches nine years of age or more, if marriage is facilitated, she marries. A girl of nine, a girl of ten, a girl of eleven; there is no blame. Aisha married the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when she was seven years old, and he consummated the marriage with her when she was nine (may Allah be pleased with her), yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Young man, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from looking at strange women and preserves you from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting, for it is a means of suppressing sexual desire.
