The reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Hatim—meaning ibn Isma'il—narrated to us from Yazid ibn Abi 'Ubayd from Salama ibn al-Akwa':
That he entered upon al-Hajjaj, and he said: "O ibn al-Akwa', have you turned back on your heels? Have you become an Arab?" He said: "No, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me permission to live in the desert."
أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى الْحَجَّاجِ، فَقَالَ : يَا ابْنَ الْأَكْوَعِ، ارْتَدَدْتَ عَلَى عَقِبَيْكَ؟ تَعَرَّبْتَ؟ قَالَ : لَا، وَلَكِنْ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَذِنَ لِي فِي الْبَدْوِ
