The reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Hatim—meaning ibn Isma'il—narrated to us from Yazid ibn Abi 'Ubayd, who said: I heard Salama ibn al-Akwa' say:
I went out before the first adhan was called, and the she-camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were grazing at Dhi Qarad. He said: A young man belonging to 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf met me and said: The she-camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) have been taken. I said: Who took them? He said: Ghatafan. He said: So I shouted three times, "O morning!" He said: And I made myself heard between the two banks of Medina, then I set out in my direction until I caught up with them at Dhi Qarad, and they had started to drink from the water. I began to throw my arrows at them, and I was a skilled archer, and I said: I am Ibn al-Akwa' *** And today is the day of the sucklings. I kept chanting until I rescued the she-camels from them and stripped them of thirty cloaks. He said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people came, and I said: O Prophet of Allah, I have prevented the people from the water while they are thirsty, so send to them now. He said: O Ibn al-Akwa', you have taken control, so be generous. He said: Then we returned, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding behind me on his she-camel until we entered Medina.
