The Shaykh’s note on the importance of knowing the issues and discussing the evidence of the opposing party.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : I mean, does it mean lengthening? I mean, what do you want?

The questioner : ... I mean, do you have a simplified explanation of what came before regarding al-Zad?

The Shaykh : By Allah, I do not know. We have explained all of al-Zad before.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes? Huh?

The questioner : ... We need, for example, to unravel the phrase and the stronger opinion.

The Shaykh : And we proceed? By Allah, if you see this, I have no objection, everyone, yes?

The questioner : Shaykh, as you are, O Shaykh, may Allah reward him.
Another questioner: I mean what came before, I mean...

The Shaykh : I have, if I gave you a full cup, drink until you are satisfied and leave the rest, but if I gave you a cup of water that is only half full, you would need more. Now, I have students of knowledge before me, not beginners. All of them, praise be to Allah, have some knowledge. And I see that knowledge is not merely memorizing issues. I see that knowledge is for a person to train his mind on discussion so that he is able to make a sound judgment when he prefers one opinion, and so that he has an argument if he is questioned and challenged. Otherwise, it is possible, as we did in explaining al-Nukhba, to unravel the phrase and give one or two examples by which the meaning becomes clear, and we proceed. But there is an opinion, and I do not know what I am. This is my opinion, even.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Even in the university, this is my opinion, and I say to the students, "O people, if we took ten issues and discussed them fully, a complete discussion with mentioning the evidence and the reasoning and refuting the other party's argument, that is better than a thousand issues, absolutely. And you know that there was a man among the students of knowledge in the past who memorized the book "al-Furu'" in the jurisprudence of the Hanbalis, the book "al-Furu'". This is not only in the jurisprudence of the Hanbalis, in reality, because it mentions the Hanbalis and points to the disagreement of the other three Imams. It has evidence and good reasoning. It is a good book they call the broom of the school. There was a man who memorized this entire book from its beginning to its end, but he did not know. So they called him the donkey of al-Furu', carrying loads. When they sat with him in the gathering and discussed one of the issues, they said to him, "O so-and-so, what does the author of al-Furu' say?" It was as if it was just a book to be consulted. He was not a scholar. And so is the student in the House of Tawhid in Ta'if, when it was first established, there was a student. An exam question came, and the first thing it asked was, "What is the ruling on a person turning his head in prayer?" The important thing is it asked about one ruling... So the student said, "J, F, S, L. It is disliked in prayer to turn one's head, raise one's eyes to the sky, gird oneself with a belt, sit on one's heels, and spread one's arms." He brought all the disliked things, then said at the end, "Take what you want and leave what you want," because he did not know the meaning. He did not know the meaning. So the result is that understanding the meaning, the opinions of the scholars, and the basis of the scholars' opinions, I believe this is knowledge. If you refuse except that we proceed, we proceed.

The questioner : No, no, O, nothing on it.

The Shaykh : What is the addition?

The questioner : This detail is injustice.

The Shaykh : Okay, in any case, if you want us to lighten it, we will lighten it, there is no objection.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : May Allah make it easy. We ask Allah to guide us to what is good. Let them be.

The questioner : Amen.
Another questioner: The time, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : We gave them what we took from them.

The questioner : ... A quarter of an hour.

The Shaykh : And that? What we took from them?

The questioner : ... .

The questioner :"Without their permission, like a master with his female slaves and his young slave. And the remaining guardians do not marry a girl under nine, nor a boy, nor a sane woman, nor a girl of nine, except with their permission, and that is the condition for the virgin and the wording for the non-virgin."
