Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the context of the hadith of Ka'b: "
When this news reached me that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was on his way back from Tabuk I was greatly perturbed. I thought of fabricating false stories and asked myself how I would save myself from his anger on the following day. In this connection, I sought the help of every prudent man from amongst the members of my family and when it was said to me that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was about to arrive, all the false ideas banished (from my mind) and I came to the conclusion that nothing could save me but the telling of truth, so I decided to speak the truth and it was in the morning that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) arrived (in Medina). And it was his habit that as he came back from a journey he first went to the mosque and observed two Rak'ahs of nafl prayer (as a mark of gratitude) and then sat amongst people. And as he did that, those who had remained behind him began to put forward their excuses and take an oath before him and they were more than eighty persons. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) accepted their excuses on the very face of them and accepted their allegiance and sought forgiveness for them and left their secret (intentions) to Allah, until I presented myself to him. I greeted him and he smiled and there was a tinge of anger in that. He (the Holy Prophet) then said to me: Come forward. I went forward until I sat in front of him. He said to me: What kept you back? Could you not afford to go in for a ride? I said: Allah's Messenger, by Allah, if I were to sit in the presence of anybody else from amongst the worldly people I would have definitely saved myself from his anger on one pretext (or the other) and I have also the knack to fall into argumentation, but, by Allah, I am fully aware of the fact that if I were to put forward before you a false excuse to please you Allah would definitely provoke your wrath upon me, and if I speak the truth you may be annoyed with me, but I hope that Allah would make its end well

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted the remainder of the hadith of Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the story of his absence from the Battle of Tabuk. He said (may Allah be pleased with him): When he heard that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had returned from the expedition, he began to think and consult, asking what he would say to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he returned? He wanted to speak a story, even if it was a lie, in order for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to excuse him. He consulted the people of opinion among his family about what to say. But he said (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the city, whatever falsehood he had gathered disappeared from him, and he resolved to state the truth to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said:
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in the city and entered the mosque, and it was from his habit and his Sunnah that when he arrived in his city, the first thing he would do is pray in the mosque, peace and blessings be upon him, the first thing he would do is pray in the mosque.
, and likewise Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) was commanded, as I will mention if Allah wills,
He entered the mosque, prayed, and sat with the people. Then came the laggards who had stayed behind without excuse from among the hypocrites, and they kept swearing to him that they had a valid excuse, so he accepted their pledge of allegiance and sought forgiveness for them.
: But that does not benefit them, may Allah protect us, because Allah said:
Ask forgiveness for them, [O Muhammad], or do not ask forgiveness for them. If you should ask forgiveness for them seventy times - never will Allah forgive them
[At-Tawbah 9:80]
, he said:
As for me, I resolved to tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the truth and inform him of the truth. So I entered the mosque and greeted him, and he smiled the smile of one who is angry.
: meaning the one who is not pleased with me. Then he said:
“Come here.” So I approached him, and when I was near him, he said to him: “What kept you back?” He said, (may Allah be pleased with him): “O Messenger of Allah, I did not stay behind for an excuse, and I had never owned two mounts before this expedition. And if I had sat with any of the kings of this world, I would have left with an excuse, for I have been given eloquence.”
meaning: If I had sat with a person from the kings, I would have known how to escape from him, because Allah has given me eloquence,
But I will not tell you today a story that you would be pleased with, for Allah is likely to become angry with me over it.
: (may Allah be pleased with him). Look, faith said: I cannot tell you a lie. If I told you a lie and you were pleased with me today, it is likely that Allah would become angry with me. So he informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the truth, and he delayed him.
Among the benefits of this hadith are:
First: That Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, may bestow upon a servant and protect him from sin if He knows the goodness of his intention in his heart. For when Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to fabricate against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah made it abhorrent to his heart, removed it from his heart, and he resolved to tell the truth to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And among the benefits: It is recommended for a person, when he arrives in his city, to go to the mosque before entering his house, and to pray two units of prayer in it, because this is the verbal and practical Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). As for the practical one, you have heard it in this hadith of Ka'b. As for the verbal one:
When Jabir ibn 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) sold his camel to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the way, and stipulated that he could ride it to Madinah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his condition, Jabir arrived in Madinah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had arrived before him. So he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ordered him to enter the mosque and pray two rak'ahs.
: So this—that is, praying two units of prayer when you first arrive in your city—is from the verbal and practical Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I do not think anyone among the people today, except a few, practices this Sunnah, but due to the ignorance of the people; otherwise, the matter is easy, and praise be to Allah. Whether you pray in your mosque where you used to pray near your house, or you pray in the nearest mosque of the city you are in. If, for example, you arrive and pray in the first mosque on your way as you enter your city in the same city, you have fulfilled the Sunnah.
And in this, from the benefits, in this hadith, from the benefits: That Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was a strong man, strong in argument, eloquent, but due to his piety and fear of Allah, he refrained from lying, and he informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the truth.
And among its benefits: That an angry person may smile. So if someone says: How do I know if this is a smile of satisfaction or a smile of anger? We say: This is known by the circumstances: by the change in the face and the alteration of the face. So a person knows that this man smiled in satisfaction with what he did, or smiled in anger at him.
And among the benefits of this portion of the hadith: That it is permissible for a person to greet a seated person while standing, because Ka'b greeted him while standing, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Come تعال
.
And among the benefits of this hadith also: That speaking from close is more effective than speaking from far. For it was possible for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to speak to Ka'b ibn Malik even if he was far from him, but he commanded him to come close to him because this is more effective in taking and giving and in reprimand. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Come closer. ادن
.
And among the benefits of this hadith also: The perfection of the certainty of Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), where he said: I am able to escape with an excuse from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), but it is not possible for me to escape with an excuse that excuses me today and then Allah becomes angry with me for it tomorrow.
And in it also: That Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, knows the secret and what is more hidden. For Ka'b feared that Allah the Exalted would hear his statement and his dialogue with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), so Allah would reveal a Quran about him, as He revealed in the story of the woman who came to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) complaining about her husband when he pronounced zihar from her, so Allah revealed a verse of the Quran about her:
Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.
[Al-Mujadila 58:1]
, and success is from Allah.
