Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We have previously discussed the verses that the author (may Allah have mercy on him) cited regarding the fear of Allah the Exalted and Mighty. Then he mentioned the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked who is the most noble of people, and he said
The most God-fearing among them أتقاهم
This answer is in complete accordance with the saying of Allah the Exalted
Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you إن أكرمكم عند الله أتقاكم
[Al-Hujurat 49:13]
So Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, does not look at people in terms of lineage, nor in terms of nobility, nor in terms of wealth, nor in terms of beauty, but rather He, Glorified and Exalted is He, looks at deeds. Therefore, the most noble of people in His sight are the most God-fearing of them towards Him. For this reason, He bestows upon the people of taqwa (mindfulness of Allah) the apparent or hidden miracles (karamat) that He grants them, because they are the most noble of His creation in His sight. In this is an encouragement to fear Allah the Exalted and Mighty, and that the more a person fears Allah, the more noble he is in His sight. But the Companions did not want this with their question; they did not want to know who is the most noble in the sight of Allah. They said
We are not asking you about that لسنا عن هذا نسألك
Sahih Ibn Hibban 7:42
Then he mentioned to them that the most noble of creation is
Yusuf, the Prophet of Allah, son of the Prophet of Allah, who was the son of the Intimate Friend of Allah (Ibrahim) يوسف نبي الله ابن نبي الله ابن خليل الله
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 129
Yusuf, son of Ya'qub, son of Ishaq, son of Ibrahim. For he, peace and blessings be upon him, was a Prophet from the lineage of Prophets, so he was among the most noble of creation. They said
We are not asking you about that لسنا عن هذا نسألك
Sahih Ibn Hibban 7:42
He said
Then you want to ask me about the origins of the Arabs? فعن معادن العرب تسألونني
Sahih al-Bukhari 3383
Origins means their roots, meaning their roots and lineages.
Those who were the best amongst you in the Prelslamic Period are the best amongst you in Islam if they comprehend (the Islamic religion). خياركم في الجاهلية خياركم في الإسلام إذا فقهوا
Sahih al-Bukhari 4689
Meaning that the most noble of people in terms of lineage, origins, and roots are the best of them in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, but with the condition that they understand the religion. For example, it is well known that Banu Hashim are the best of Quraysh, so they would be the best of them in Islam, but with the condition that they understand the religion of Allah and learn from the religion of Allah. If they are not jurists, then even if they are among the best of the Arabs in terms of origin, they are not the most noble of creation in the sight of Allah, nor are they the best of creation. In this is evidence that a person is honored by his lineage, but with the condition that he has understanding of his religion. And there is no doubt that lineage has an effect. For this reason, Banu Hashim are the purest of people in lineage and the most noble in lineage. And thus, from them came the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the most noble of creation, and
Allah is most knowing of where He places His message الله أعلم حيث يجعل رسالته
[Al-An'am 6:124]
If this group of the children of Adam were not the most noble of the groups, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not have been among them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not sent except in the most noble of the groups and the highest of lineages. The point of this hadith is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
The most noble of creation are the most God-fearing of them towards Allah إن أكرم الخلق أتقاهم لله
So if you want to be noble in the sight of Allah and have a high status with Him, you must have taqwa (mindfulness of Allah). The more a person fears Allah, the more noble he is in His sight. I ask Allah to make me and you among the God-fearing. O Allah, send prayers and peace upon him.
