The reciter : " The Condemnation of the Two-Faced Person. Allah the Exalted said
They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allah, of what they do, encompassing.
[An-Nisa 4:108]
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said
People are like ores. Those who were excellent in the Days of Ignorance are excellent in Islam provided they acquire the knowledge and understanding of the religion. You will find the best people in it (Islam) those who had a deep hatred (for leadership).
Riyad as-Salihin 1540

The Shaykh : And you will find
The reciter : "
You will find the best people in it (Islam) those who had a deep hatred (for leadership). You will find the worst among the people a double-faced person who appears to some people with one face
Riyad as-Salihin 1540

And narrated by Muhammad ibn Zayd
Muhammad bin Zaid reported: Some people said to my grandfather, 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them): We visit our rulers and tell them things contrary to what we say when we leave them. 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) replied: "In the days of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), we counted this act as an act of hypocrisy."
Riyad as-Salihin 1541
Narrated by al-Bukhari "

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Saliheen* " Chapter on the Condemnation of the Two-Faced Person " The two-faced person is the one who comes to these people with one face and to those people with another face, just as the hypocrites do
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."
[Al-Baqarah 2:14]
This is found in many people, and I seek refuge in Allah, and it is a branch of hypocrisy. You find him coming to you, flattering you and praising you, and perhaps he exaggerates in that praise. But when he is behind your back, he undermines you, slanders you, curses you, and mentions things about you that are not in you. This, and I seek refuge in Allah, is as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
You will find the worst of people to be the two-faced one who comes to these people with one face and to those people with another face.
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:895
This is one of the major sins because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) described its doer as the worst of people. It is obligatory for a person to be straightforward and not say anything other than what is in his heart. If it is good, he is praised for it, and if it is otherwise, he is directed toward the good. As for coming to these people with one face and to those people with another face, whether in what concerns his worship—where he appears to be a worshipper, a believer, and a pious person, while he is the opposite—or in what concerns his dealings with a person—where he appears to be sincere to him, praising and commending him, but when he is absent, he undermines him—this is not permissible.
Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the noble verse
They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allah, of what they do, encompassing.
[An-Nisa 4:108]
This verse was revealed regarding a group of people who hide in their hearts what they do not show to people. They tell people things that are not in their hearts, so when they are alone and gather at night, they reveal what is in their souls, and I seek refuge in Allah, which they had previously hidden from people. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says
They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allah, of what they do, encompassing.
[An-Nisa 4:108]
And similar to this is the one who commits a sin in secret and denies it, and does not commit it in front of people out of shyness and modesty toward them, but as for Allah, he does not shy away from Him and does not feel modest before Him, and I seek refuge in Allah. This falls under the noble verse.
As for the one who commits a sin and feels remorse and repents, it is not permissible for him to tell people what he did, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin
Sahih al-Bukhari 6069
The one who is open about it is the one who, when he commits a sin, tells about it. It is obligatory for a person to be straightforward, with his outward appearance matching his inward state. And if he is straightforward, if he is upon good, the people of good will confirm it for him and he will continue, and if he is upon the opposite, they will point it out to him, pointing out the evil he is upon so that he may be deterred. We ask Allah the Exalted to make our inward states better than our outward appearances, and to guide us and you to what He is pleased with. Indeed, He is capable of all things.
