Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the hadith of Abu al-Abbas Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Khaybar:
Tomorrow I will give this flag to a man through whose hands Allah will give us victory. He loves Allah and His Apostle, and he is loved by Allah and His Apostle.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4210
This good news contained a general good news and a specific good news. As for the general one, it is his saying:
at whose hands Allah will grant victory
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942
And as for the specific one, it is his saying:
loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3725Da'if (Darussalam)
Khaybar was farms and fortresses of the Jews, located about a hundred miles to the northwest of Madinah. The Jews inhabited it, just as a group of them inhabited Madinah itself, because the Jews read in the Torah that a Prophet would be sent and his migration would be to Madinah, which is called Yathrib in the Old Testament. But he forbade it from being called Yathrib, and that he would migrate to Madinah and fight and be victorious over his enemies. So they knew that this was true and went to Madinah and settled there and in Khaybar. They thought that this Prophet would be from the Children of Israel, but when he was sent from the Arabs of the Children of Isma'il, they envied them and disbelieved in him, refuge with Allah, after they knew him as they know their own sons
when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it
[Al-Baqarah 2:89]
and they said, "This is not the Prophet whom we were promised." And what happened from them was the treaty with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), followed by betrayal. For they were three tribes in Madinah: Banu Qaynuqa, Banu al-Nadir, and Banu Qurayzah. All of them made a treaty with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but all of them broke the treaty. So Allah defeated them, praise be to Allah, by the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The last of them were Banu Qurayzah, in whose case Sa'd ibn Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled that their fighting men should be killed, their women and children taken captive, and their wealth taken as spoils. They were seven hundred, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered their killing, and they were cut down to the last one. And so it is with the Jews. The Jews, our brothers, are people of treachery, betrayal, and breaking of treaties, from the time Musa (peace be upon him) was sent among them until this day and until the Day of Resurrection. They are the most treacherous of people regarding treaties and the most unfaithful regarding trusts. Therefore, they are never to be trusted, neither in trade nor in justice. And whoever trusts them or has confidence in them has, in reality, not known their conduct since ancient times. The important point is that Khaybar was their fortresses and farms, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raided them, and Allah granted victory through his hands. The rest of the hadith will come, if Allah wills.
The reader: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted: "From Abu al-Abbas Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Khaybar:
On the day of Khaibar, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Tomorrow I will give this flag to a man through whose hands Allah will give us victory. He loves Allah and His Apostle, and he is loved by Allah and His Apostle." The people remained that night, wondering as to who would be given it. In the morning the people went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and everyone of them was hopeful to receive it (i.e. the flag). The Prophet said, "Where is `Ali bin Abi Talib?" It was said, "He is suffering from eye trouble O Allah's Apostle."
Sahih al-Bukhari 4210
