The Shaykh : In this hadith is evidence for using strictness in changing what is wrong when the need calls for it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say to him: “Gold is forbidden, so do not wear it” or “Remove it,” but rather he himself removed it and threw it on the ground. In it is also evidence for the permissibility of destroying that by which wrong is done, because the Messenger (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him) threw it away; when he removed it from his hand, he did not say, “Take it and give it to your family,” but he threw it away. For this reason, it was part of the man’s jurisprudence that when it was said to him: because he understood that this falls under the category of discretionary punishment and its application to him, because the sin was committed through it. There is no blame on a person for destroying that by which a sin is committed or an obligatory duty is neglected, as a form of self-punishment for himself, just as Sulayman (peace be upon him) did when the fine horses were presented to him and he became preoccupied with them until the sun set, and he was distracted from the afternoon prayer by them. Then he called upon them (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him) and began to strike them, breaking their legs and cutting their necks [Sad 38:33] the plural of saq (leg) he destroyed them as a form of self-punishment for the pleasure of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So if a person sees that something of his wealth has distracted him from the obedience of Allah and he wants to destroy it as a form of self-punishment and discretionary punishment for himself, then there is nothing wrong with that. In this hadith is evidence that wearing gold is a cause of punishment by fire, and I seek refuge in Allah from that, due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) made this a brand of fire, meaning that one is punished by it on the Day of Resurrection. It is a partial punishment, meaning on part of the body, on the part by which the transgression was committed. Its equivalent is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the one who drags his garment below the ankles: “He said: Sunan Ibn Majah 3573Sahih (Darussalam) Its equivalent is also his saying when the Companions were deficient in washing their feet: “He said: Sunan Ibn Majah 453Sahih (Darussalam) These are three texts; memorize them. Three texts; there may be others, but these three texts all affirm that punishment by fire may be on a part of the body. In it is also in the Qur’an [At-Tawbah 9:35] specific places. So punishment, just as it may be general for the entire body, may be specific to some of its parts, namely those by which the transgression was committed. In this hadith, and among its benefits, is the clarification of the perfection of the truthfulness of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in their faith from the perfection of his faith (may Allah be pleased with him). If his faith had been weak, he would have taken it and benefited from it by selling it or giving it to his family or the like. Among the benefits of this hadith is also that a person should use wisdom in changing what is wrong. This man, as you see, the Prophet (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him) used some strictness with him, but the Bedouin who urinated in the mosque, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not use strictness with him. Perhaps that was because the Prophet (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him) knew from him that he was aware of the ruling but was lax, unlike the Bedouin, who was ignorant and did not know; he came and found this open space in the mosque and began to urinate, thinking he was in the desert. When the people stood up to him to rebuke him, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from doing so. So you, my Muslim brother, must use wisdom in everything you do and everything you say, for Allah the Exalted says in His Book: [Al-Baqarah 2:269] We ask Allah to make us among those who are given wisdom and attain much good through it. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad.
