The Use of Firmness at Times in Calling to Allah and the Story of the Man Who Had a Gold Ring on His Hand

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We mention a third example in which there is wisdom.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a gold ring on a man’s hand—and gold is forbidden for men—so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) removed it from the man’s finger and threw it on the ground, then he said:
One of you is wishing live coal from Hell. and putting it on his hand. يعمد أحدكم إِلى جمرة من نار فيضعها في يده
Sahih Muslim 2090
.
If you compare this man’s story with the story of the Bedouin and the story of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam, you will find a difference between it and theirs.
This contains an element of firmness, because it was the Messenger who removed it, and he threatened this man that what he had put on his hand was a coal of fire.
When the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) left, it was said to the man: “Take your ring and benefit from it.” He said:
By Allah, I will not take a ring that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw away واللّه، لا آخذ خاتما طرحه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:227
.
O Allah, be pleased with him.
So, for every occasion, there is a fitting response.
