The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the prohibition of lying: "It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1543 It is agreed upon."
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he transmitted in the chapter on the prohibition of lying in *Riyad al-Salihin*, from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1584 His statement Sunan Abi Dawud 4688Sahih (Al-Albani) means whoever is characterized by them, because he has committed all the actions by which the hypocrites are characterized, and may Allah protect us from that. The intended meaning of hypocrisy here is practical hypocrisy, which is the state of those who commit doctrinal hypocrisy, and it is not hypocrisy of belief, because hypocrisy of belief is hypocrisy of disbelief, and may Allah protect us from that, which is when one outwardly displays Islam while inwardly concealing disbelief. As for those who are characterized by these traits, they believe in Allah and the Last Day with true faith, but they practice these traits, and in them is an element of hypocrisy.
First, he said: When a person is trusted with something, he betrays it. For example, if he is given a deposit and told, “Take this and keep it safe,” whether it is dirhams, a watch, a pen, goods, or something else, he betrays it by appropriating it for himself, or by neglecting it and not keeping it in its place, or by informing someone who can seize it and take it. The important thing is that he does not fulfill the trust in it. Similarly, if he is trusted with a secret and told not to tell anyone, he goes and discloses it, saying, “So-and-so told me this,” or “So-and-so told me that.” Some people, may Allah protect us from that, are afflicted with a love of showing off and fame. If one of the rulers or the leaders and notables of the people trusts him, he goes around talking, saying, “The prince told me this,” or “The minister told me that,” or “The Shaykh told me this.” He adorns himself before people by claiming to be among those whom the leaders and nobles converse with. This is contrary to trust, may Allah protect us from that.
Also included in this are trusts in positions of authority. A person may be a guardian over an orphan, responsible for his wealth, his custody, and his discipline, but he does not fulfill the obligatory duties. He neglects his wealth and may even borrow it for himself, not knowing if he will be able to repay it later. He does not treat him with the best manner. This is also a betrayal of trust.
Also included in this is that a person does not fulfill the duty of raising his family and children, although Allah has trusted them to him. Allah, the Exalted, said:[At-Tahrim 66:6] And Allah did not give you authority over them except to question you about them on the Day of Resurrection, until you wish that there had been no connection between you and them. Allah, the Exalted, said: ['Abasa 80:34-37]
Betrayal of trust also occurs when a person is an imam for people, leading them in Friday prayers and congregational prayers, but does not fulfill the obligatory duties. You find him sometimes advancing early and sometimes delaying, sometimes lengthening the prayer in an impermissible way, and sometimes not settling into his prayer or caring about those behind him. This is a betrayal of trust.
The important point is that betrayal of trust occurs in all circumstances: in trusts, in transactions, in morals, and in everything.Sahih al-Bukhari 34 This is the evidence: when people are told a story, saying “So-and-so said this” or “Such-and-such happened,” when it did not happen, he is lying. This is one of the signs of hypocrisy.
Some people are afflicted with this matter. You find them lying to people, joking with them to trap them. Once they are trapped, they say, “I was just joking.” Glory be to Allah! You lie to people, joke with them, and trap them.
Some people are afflicted with lying in order to make the audience laugh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Bulugh al-Maram 16:80
It has been mentioned previously that the greatest lie is lying about Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), followed by lying about the scholars. If a person lies about the scholars regarding the Shari'ah by saying, “So-and-so said this is lawful,” or “This is forbidden,” or “This is obligatory,” while he is lying about him, then this is lying about the Shari'ah. This is because the scholars are those who represent the Shari'ah and explain it to people. If a person lies about them and says that such-and-such a scholar said this and that, while he is lying, then he is similar to or close to one who lies about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The important point is that whoever speaks and lies has a share of the characteristics of hypocrisy. May Allah protect us and you from that.

Whosoever possesses these four characteristics, is a sheer hypocrite; and anyone who possesses one of them, possesses a characteristic of hypocrisy till he gives it up. (These are:) When he is entrusted with something, he proves dishonest; when he talks, he tells a lie; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he quarrels, he utters foul language.
