Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, in what he quoted from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
A bulky person would be brought on the Day of judgment and he would not carry the weight to the eye of Allah equal even to that of a gnat
Sahih Muslim 2785
: The author mentioned this hadith in: “The Chapter on the Oppressed and the Poor among the Muslims” , and that is because fatness generally comes from gluttony, meaning from excessive eating. Excessive eating indicates wealth and abundance, and the wealthy are generally prone to arrogance, greed, and ingratitude toward the blessing. So much so that on the Day of Resurrection, they will be in this state: the large, fat man—meaning one with much flesh and fat, large in body—will not weigh with Allah on the Day of Resurrection even the wing of a gnat. The gnat is known to be among the weakest and most insignificant of animals, and its wing is likewise.
In this hadith is the affirmation of the weighing on the Day of Resurrection, and the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has indicated this. Allah the Exalted said:
And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.
[Al-Anbya 21:47]
, and He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
(7) So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, (8) And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.
[Az-Zalzalah 99:7-8]
.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2552Sahih (Darussalam)
.
So the weighing on the Day of Resurrection is a weighing of justice, in which there is no injustice. A person is rewarded according to what he has of good deeds and bad deeds. The scholars said: “Whoever’s good deeds outweigh his bad deeds is among the people of Paradise. Whoever’s bad deeds outweigh his good deeds has earned being punished in the Fire. And whoever’s good and bad deeds are equal is among the people of the 'Arafah, who will be between Paradise and the Fire for a period, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) wills, and in the end, they will enter Paradise.”
Then, the weighing is a physical weighing with a scale that has two pans. The bad deeds are placed in one pan and the good deeds in the other. The good deeds become heavy and the bad deeds become light if the good deeds are more, and vice versa.
Then, what is weighed? The apparent meaning of this hadith is that the person is weighed; the one who is weighed is the person, and he becomes light or heavy according to his deeds.
And some scholars said: “Rather, what is weighed are the scrolls of deeds. The scrolls of bad deeds are placed in one pan, and the scrolls of good deeds in the other, and whatever outweighs, the action is according to it.”
And it was said: Rather, what is weighed is the deed, because Allah the Exalted said:
So whoever does an atom's weight
[Az-Zalzalah 99:7]
, making the weighing for the deed. And He the Exalted said:
And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth
[Al-Anbya 21:47]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
two words which are dear to the Beneficent (Allah) and very light (easy) for the tongue (to say), but very heavy in weight in the balance. They are: ''Subhan Allah wa-bi hamdihi'' and ''Subhan Allah Al-`Azim.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7563
. So his saying:
Two words heavy on the scale
: indicates that what is weighed is the deed. This is the apparent meaning of the Noble Qur'an and the apparent meaning of the Sunnah. Perhaps both are weighed, meaning the deeds are weighed and the scrolls of deeds are weighed.
In this hadith is a warning against a person not caring for anything except himself, meaning the comfort of his body. What the sensible person should care for is the comfort of his heart. The comfort of a person's heart is by fitrah, which is adhering to the religion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And if the heart is comfortable, the body is comfortable, and not the other way around.
The body may be comfortable, and a person may be given from this world what is given from its adornment, but his heart is in torment, may Allah protect us from that.
And if you wish to clarify this, read the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
[An-Nahl 16:97]
. He did not say: “So We will make their bodies comfortable,”
So We will give him a good life
: and that is by what Allah places in their hearts of intimacy, expansion of the chest, tranquility of the heart, and the like. So much so that some of the Salaf said: “If the kings and the sons of kings knew what we are in, they would fight us for it with swords.” : meaning the expansion of the chest, the light of the heart, and the tranquility and calm.
I ask Allah to expand my heart and your hearts for Islam, and to illuminate them with knowledge and faith. Indeed, He is Generous and Noble.
