Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
We have previously mentioned that dutifulness to parents, birr al-walidayn, continues even after death, and that is by honoring the man’s father’s friends. We have also mentioned the story of Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding honoring a man whose father was a friend of Umar, where he dismounted from his donkey and let the man ride it, and he took off his turban, which he used to tie around his head, and gave it to this Bedouin as an honor to the son of Umar’s friend (may Allah be pleased with him).
Likewise, what remains of dutifulness after the death of the parents is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) mentioned when he was asked:
Is there any dutifulness to my parents remaining after their death, or anything by which I can be dutiful to them? He said: Yes, praying for them هل بقي من بعد موت أبوي برهما أو شيء أبرهما به؟ قال: نعم، الصلاة عليهما
: Praying for them: This means supplicating for them, and it does not mean the funeral prayer, but rather it means supplication.
So, prayer here means supplication, just as Allah the Exalted said:
Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah 's blessings] upon them خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ
[At-Tawbah 9:103]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say when charity was brought to him:
O Allah! Bestow Your Blessing upon the family of so-and-so. اللهم صل على آل فلان
Sahih al-Bukhari 6332
, as Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa said:
That he brought the charity of his people to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), so he said: O Allah, pray upon the family of Abi Awfa أنه أتى بصدقة قومه إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ، فقال: اللهم صل على آل أبي أوفى
, so he supplicated for them by praying for them.
So, the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) here:
Pray for them الصلاة عليهما
: means supplicating for them with prayer, so he says: O Allah, pray upon my parents, or he supplicates for them to enter Paradise and be saved from the Fire, and the like of that.
The second:
Seeking forgiveness for them الاستغفار لهما
: That a person seeks forgiveness for his parents, saying: O Allah, forgive them, or saying: I seek forgiveness from Allah for my parents, or saying: O Lord, forgive me and my parents, and the like of that.
Likewise, charity for them, for charity benefits the parents.
Likewise, honoring their friend, like the previous hadith of Abdullah ibn Umar, meaning if they have a friend, honor him, for this is part of his dutifulness.
And the fifth: Maintaining the ties of kinship that you have no connection to except through them, meaning maintaining the ties of the parents’ relatives, for that is part of their dutifulness, so these things constitute dutifulness after the death of the parents.
