The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The Shaykh When the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the rulings regarding dutifulness to parents and maintaining family ties, he also mentioned the rulings regarding maintaining ties with those who are connected to the parents and relatives, due to the relationship between them and their relatives, or between them and their parents. Then he mentioned the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), which is a strange story: Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when he went out to Makkah for Hajj, would have a donkey with him to rest on when he was tired of riding the camel, meaning the camel; he would rest on this donkey and then ride the camel.
The Shaykh One day, a Bedouin met him, and Ibn 'Umar asked him: Are you so-and-so, son of so-and-so? He said: Yes. So he got down from the donkey and said: Take this and ride on it. And he gave him a turban that he had tied around his head, and said to this Bedouin: Tie your head with this.
The Shaykh It was said to him, meaning to 'Abdullah: May Allah correct you, or may Allah forgive you! They are Bedouins, and Bedouins are satisfied without that. Meaning: How can you get down from the donkey and walk on your feet, and give him your turban which you use to tie your head, when he is a Bedouin who is satisfied with less than that? He said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1903Sahih (Darussalam) : Meaning, the most dutiful of the dutiful is that if your father or mother or one of your relatives dies, yes, then you are dutiful to his friends, meaning not just his friend but even the relatives of his friend.
The Shaykh And the father of this man was a friend of 'Umar, of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, a friend of his father, so he honored him out of dutifulness to his father, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
The Shaykh In this hadith is evidence of the Companions' obedience and their desire for good and their haste to it, because Ibn 'Umar derived a great benefit from this hadith, that he does this honor to this Bedouin because his father was a friend of 'Umar. So what do you think if he saw the man who was a friend of 'Umar? He would honor him even more and more.
The Shaykh It is derived from this hadith that if your father or mother has someone with whom they have affection, then honor him. For example, if there are female friends of your mother, then honor them, honor these women. If there are male friends of your father, honor these men, for this is part of dutifulness, this is part of dutifulness.
The Shaykh And in this hadith also:
The Shaykh There is the vastness of the mercy of Allah the Exalted and Majestic. In this hadith is the vastness of the mercy of Allah, that the door of dutifulness is wide and is not limited to the father and mother only, but also the friends of the father and the friends of the mother. If you do good to them, then you have been dutiful to your parents, so you are rewarded with the reward of one who is dutiful to his parents.
The Shaykh And this is from the grace of Allah the Exalted and Majestic, that He widened the doors of good for His servants and multiplied them for them, so that they may enter them from every side. We ask Allah the Exalted to make us and you among the dutiful. Indeed, He is Generous and Noble. And may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and all his Companions.
