Continuation of the explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The one who caught up with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was wearing a thick-bordered Najrani cloak, and pulled him, meaning he pulled him with a severe pull, until the border of the cloak left a mark on the neck of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) due to the intensity of the pull. He turned around and found it was the Bedouin asking for a gift. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and ordered a gift for him. Look at this noble character: he did not reprimand him, he did not hit him, he did not glare at him, and he did not frown; rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed, and despite this, he ordered a gift for him.
If any of us did this action to us, we would not accept it; we would fight him and hit him. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), about whom Allah said:
And indeed, you are of a great character وإنّك لعلى خلق عظيم
, turned to him, laughed at him, and gave him the gift. And thus a person should be generous in his nature, and when people become severe, he should be lenient. Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: "By what means did you rule the people?" because Mu'awiyah was known for his politics and wisdom. He said: "I place a hair between me and the people; if they pull it, I follow them, and if I pull it, they follow me, but it does not break". This means that I am easy to accommodate, because if you place a hair between you and your companion, if he pulls it with even a slight pull, it breaks. But due to his good politics (may Allah be pleased with him), he ruled the people with this policy: when he saw them approaching, he welcomed them, and when he saw them retreating, he followed them until he could control them. Thus, a person should always be gentle and forbearing in his dealings, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was. We ask Allah the Exalted to grant us and you good manners and character.
The student: Amen.
