The questioner : May the Shaykh be respected, I and my brothers live in isolation, for our father does not want us to go to our maternal uncles and aunts except on general occasions such as the festivals only, and as for our mother’s maternal uncles, I do not know them, nor do I know the daughters or the wives, and they do not come to us...
The Shaykh : And they?
The questioner : And they do not come to us. So does the sin attach to us, or is the sin upon our father, may Allah forgive him? And what do we do in order to maintain family ties? May you be rewarded.
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. Indeed, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has made it obligatory upon the servant to maintain his family ties, that is, his relatives, and He has promised that He will maintain the ties of one who maintains them. Indeed, Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) has guaranteed for the family tie that He will maintain the ties of one who maintains them and cut off the ties of one who cuts them off. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has praised those who maintain what Allah has commanded to be maintained. As for cutting off family ties, it is among the major sins. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:[Muhammad 47:22-23] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1909Sahih (Darussalam) meaning one who cuts off family ties. And it is not permissible for anyone to prevent a man from maintaining his family ties, because that is from the category of opposing Allah the Exalted and His Messenger, where one prevents the maintenance of ties of those whom Allah has commanded to be maintained. And the father should fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and not prevent any of his family from maintaining their relatives. And if he fears harm and corruption, then he should avert this corruption and harm by going with them to their relatives, then returning with them before what he fears happens. For example, if he fears that if his daughter goes to her maternal uncles, she will share in their sin if they have fallen into sin, then let him go with her after Maghrib, for example, or in the late morning, or at any time, and sit with them as long as Allah wills, then return with his daughter. As for preventing her from maintaining ties with them, that is forbidden upon him. And in this case, there is no blame on the daughter for maintaining her family ties, even if her father has prevented her, but to avoid evil, fitnah, and the escalation of matters, she maintains the family ties without her father noticing, so that the intended goal is achieved without harm.

(22) So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? (23) Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
