If my salary reaches the specified nisab, is there zakah in it? When does it become due? How do I calculate the zakah on wealth? And is the hawl (lunar year) required for the nisab?

The questioner : He says, "the specified nisab." If my salary reaches it, is there zakah in it? When does it become due? How do I calculate the zakah on wealth? And is the hawl (lunar year) required for the nisab?

The Shaykh : The hawl (lunar year) is required for the nisab. The nisab is fifty-six silver riyals or their equivalent in paper currency. One should ask about the value of the fifty-six silver riyals; whatever amount is reached is the nisab. As we all know, this varies at times; silver rises and at other times it falls, so this must be taken into account.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may He bless you and your knowledge, and benefit Islam and the Muslims through you. O brothers and sisters, the honorable Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, professor at the College of Sharia and Principles of Religion in al-Qasim, and preacher and imam of the Grand Mosque in the city of Unaizah, has answered your questions. May Allah reward the Shaykh for what he clarified for us in this pleasant and blessed meeting. In conclusion, please accept the greetings of my colleague, the sound engineer, Hamad, from Muhammad al-Wabli. And peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
