The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) concluded the book on the greeting and its etiquettes with this hadith, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding a man when he comes to a gathering and then leaves it. It is known that when a person enters upon a group of people, he greets them, as mentioned previously. The greeting is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah), and returning it is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) for the one who was greeted. If they are a group, it is a collective obligation (fard kifayah); if enough of them return it, the obligation falls off the rest. However, if they are a group and it is known that the greeter intended, as his primary purpose, one specific person among them, it is obligatory for that specific person to return the greeting. For example, if there are students with their teacher, and someone enters and greets, intending primarily the teacher, then it is obligatory for the teacher to return the greeting, and it is not sufficient for the group of students to return it. Similarly, if a commander is with his men and police, and a person enters and greets, it is known that the commander is the primary intended recipient, so it is obligatory for him to return the greeting. As for when the group is equal and it is not known that any one of them is the primary intended recipient, then if one of them returns the greeting, it is sufficient, because returning the greeting is a collective obligation (fard kifayah). As for today's lesson, it is about a man when he enters a gathering, he greets, and when he intends to leave, stands up, and departs from the gathering, he greets, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that and said:Sunan Abi Dawud 5208Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani) Meaning, just as you greet when you enter, you greet when you leave. For this reason, when a person enters the mosque, he greets the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and when he exits, he greets him as well. And when a person enters Makkah for 'Umrah or Hajj, he begins with tawaf, and when he leaves Makkah and departs, he concludes with tawaf, because tawaf is the greeting of Makkah for one who enters with Hajj or 'Umrah, and likewise the farewell to Makkah for one who came with Hajj or 'Umrah and then traveled. This is part of the perfection of the Shari'ah, which made the beginning and the end equal in such matters. The Shari'ah, as everyone knows, is from a Wise and Knowing One, as He the Exalted said: [Hud 11:1] You will find it all harmonious and consistent, with no contradiction or preference. Even the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade a man from walking with one sandal, meaning, for example, do not walk with one sandal, even to fix the other; walk with both sandals. Why? Because if you single out one foot with a sandal, there is injustice and lack of equity in that. So you see now that the Islamic Shari'ah came with justice in everything. [An-Nahl 16:90] And success is from Allah.
The student : Shaykh, what if there is food?
The Shaykh : How is that?
The student: ...
The Shaykh : Greet them, greet them. And when you stand up, first mention the name of Allah over the food, praise Allah when you finish, and give the greeting when you finish.
