The Shaykh : The author also mentioned the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them), in which he said: "We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and we kissed his hand", and he approved them for doing so. Kissing the hand is like kissing the head; there is no difference between them. However, it is surprising that people nowadays object to kissing the hand more than they object to kissing the head, even though there is no difference between them. But what is criticized by some people is that when someone greets him, he extends his hand to him, as if he is saying, "What is it?" as if he is saying, "Kiss my hand." That is what is objected to, and it is said to the person, "Do not do that." As for people who kiss your hand out of respect and reverence, or your head or your forehead, there is nothing wrong with that, except that this should not happen every time they meet you. Because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about that: if a man meets his brother, does he bow to him? He said:
No. لا
He said: Does he kiss him and embrace him? He said:
No. لا
He said: Does he shake his hand? He said:
Yes نعم
But if it is for a reason, there is nothing wrong with it, such as the arrival of someone who has been away. For this reason, the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the hadith of 'A'ishah regarding the arrival of Zayd ibn Harithah when he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked for permission. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to him, dragging his garment. Zayd ibn Harithah was a freed slave of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning he was a slave owned by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) whom Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) had gifted to him, so he freed him. But the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) loved him, and he loved his son Usamah. For this reason, Usamah is called "the beloved of the Messenger of Allah," the son of "the beloved of the Messenger of Allah." So he was beloved to the Messenger of Allah, and his son Usamah was likewise. The point is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, dragging his cloak or garment, and embraced him and kissed him because Zayd ibn Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) was arriving from a journey. So if it is upon arrival from a journey, there is nothing wrong with it. But if he kisses you every time he meets you, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that. Likewise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised that a person should not belittle any act of kindness. Meaning, kindness and doing good to people: do not belittle any of it, ever. Do not say, "This is little." Do not belittle anything. If you give him a pen or a watch worth ten riyals or something similar, do not belittle anything. You see that a person mentions this, even after a long time, saying, "This man gave me such and such a gift." If you give him a miswak, do not belittle anything. Do not belittle anything that brings affection and love between people. For this reason, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not consider any act of kindness insignificant, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face. لا تحقرن من المعروف شيئًا ولو أن تلقى أخاك بوجه طليق
Mishkat al-Masabih 1894
To this extent, meet your brother with a pleasant face, meaning not a frowning face. But sometimes we are overcome, meaning we do not expand in this matter. Perhaps we meet some people with a frowning face for one reason or another. There may be hidden reasons, and a person may be affected by them, and people do not know. So it does not happen that one always meets people with a pleasant face. Rather, try to meet your brothers with a pleasant, open face, because this is an act of kindness and a cause for affection and love. And the Islamic religion is a religion of love, loyalty, and brotherhood, as Allah the Exalted said:
And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers واذكروا نعمة الله عليكم إذ كنتم أعداء فألف بين قلوبكم فأصبحتم بنعمته إخوانا
[Ali 'Imran 3:103]
We ask Allah to guide us and you to the best of morals and deeds; He alone guides to the best of them. And to turn away from us the worst of morals and deeds; He alone turns away the worst of them from us.
The student : Shaykh, how do we kiss the feet of the father and the mother?

The Shaykh : It is not obligatory to kiss his foot, but if you do it, there is nothing wrong with it. However, if he is standing, do not kiss his foot; it is not obligatory. But if he is sitting, for example, or has stretched out his legs, there is nothing wrong with it, and it is not obligatory; it is not required.
