And prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the permissibility of weeping for the deceased without wailing or lamentation. It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited Sa'd ibn Rabad, accompanied by 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wept, and when the people saw the Messenger of Allah weeping, they wept. He said:
Listen, Allah does not punish for the tears that the eye sheds or the grief the heart feels, but He punishes for this (pointing to his tongue), or He may show mercy. ألا تسمعون إن الله لا يعذب بدمع العين ولا بحزن القلب ولكن يعذب بهذا أو يرحم وأشار إلى لسانه
Sahih Muslim 924
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the book *Riyad al-Saliheen*: "Chapter on the permissibility of weeping for the deceased without wailing or lamentation". Weeping for the deceased sometimes occurs by natural instinct, meaning it happens to a person without him intending it; in this case, there is no blame on him and no sin in it. Rather, it is among the character traits of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), as in the hadith mentioned by the author. It is evidence of a person's mercy and the tenderness of his heart that he weeps for the deceased. Sometimes, however, it is done with effort and accompanied by wailing or lamentation; this is what causes a person to sin. Wailing (*nadb*) is when one lists the virtues of the deceased while weeping, saying, "This is so-and-so who used to bring us such-and-such, and bring us such-and-such, and defend us," and the like, or saying, "Oh, my father," and the like, which is counted as wailing, or "Oh, the breaking of his back." As for lamentation (*niyaha*), it is weeping with a high-pitched wail, like the cooing of a pigeon; this is what is forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cursed the one who laments and the one who listens to it. As for the weeping that comes from nature, without the person intending it, but out of sadness and mercy, there is nothing wrong with it, as in the hadith mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him), where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) visited Sa'd ibn Rabad (may Allah be pleased with him) who was afflicted with an illness, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wept for him, so those with him, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas and 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both), wept. Then he said:
Do you not hear? ألا تسمعون
And the meaning of "Do you not hear?" is: "Listen."
Allah does not punish for the tears that the eye sheds or the grief the heart feels إن الله تعالى لا يعذب بدمع العين ولا بحزن القلب
Sahih Muslim 924
He does not punish for the tears of the eye or the sorrow of the heart. He does not punish the one who weeps or the one who is sad, nor does He punish the deceased.
But He punishes for this, or shows mercy, and he pointed to his tongue. وإنما يعذب بهذا أو يرحم وأشار إلى لسانه
Sahih Ibn Hibban 11:272
This means that a person says something forbidden; this is what a person is punished for. This indicates the permissibility of weeping for the deceased, on the condition that there is no wailing and no lamentation in it, but rather it comes from nature and disposition. In this case, there is nothing wrong with it, and it is among the character traits of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). And Allah knows best.
The reader: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the permissibility of weeping for the deceased without wailing or lamentation: "It was narrated from Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was brought the son of his daughter while he was dying, and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) overflowed with tears. Sa'd said to him: "What is this, O Messenger of Allah?" He said:
This is compassion which Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and God shows compassion only to those of His servants who are compassionate. هذه رحمة جعلها الله تعالى في قلوب عباده وإنما يرحم الله من عباده الرحماء
Sahih Muslim 923a
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And it was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon his son Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was on the verge of death, and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to shed tears. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf said to him: "And you, O Messenger of Allah?" He said:
Ibn ‘Auf, it is compassion يا ابن عوف إنها رحمة
Mishkat al-Masabih 1722
Then he followed it with another saying:
The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation. إن العين تدمع والقلب يحزن ولا نقول إلا ما يرضي ربنا وإنا لفراقك يا إبراهيم لمحزونون
Sahih al-Bukhari 1303
Narrated by al-Bukhari, and some of it was narrated by Muslim"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have previously spoken about the three past hadiths mentioned by al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in *Riyad al-Saliheen* in the chapter on the permissibility of weeping for the deceased without wailing or lamentation. Then he mentioned two hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he wept when he saw two children dying. The first was the son of his daughter; the son of his daughter was brought to him while he was in the process of dying, and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) shed tears.
