Chapter on the virtue of supplicating for a brother in his absence: Allah the Exalted said

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He said, may Allah have mercy on him: "Chapter on the virtue of supplicating for a brother in his absence. Allah the Exalted said:
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith والذين جاؤوا من بعدهم يقولون ربنا اغفر لنا ولإخواننا الذين سبقونا بالإيمان
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
And He said:
and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women
[Muhammad 47:19]
And He said, reporting about Ibrahim (peace be upon him):
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established." ربنا اغفر لي ولوالدي وللمؤمنين يوم يقوم الحساب
[Ibrahim 14:41]
It was narrated from Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him)
That he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: There is no Muslim servant who supplicates for his brother in his absence but that the angel says, "And for you the like" أنه سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: ما من عبد مسلم يدعو لأخيه بظهر الغيب إلا قال الملك ولك بمثل
Muslim narrated it. And it was narrated from him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say:
The supplication of a Muslim for his brother at his back (in his absence) is responded so long as he makes a supplica- tion for blessings for his brother and the commissioned Angel says: Amen, and says: May it be for you too
Sahih Muslim 2733, 2732c
Muslim narrated it"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on the virtue of supplicating for a brother in his absence", meaning: supplicating for his brother in his absence, i.e., while he is not present. This is because supplicating for a brother in his absence clearly indicates the sincerity of one's faith, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
So if you supplicate for your brother in his absence without his asking you to, this is proof of your love for him and that you love for him the good that you love for yourself. Then the author, may Allah have mercy on him, cited three verses from the Book of Allah as evidence, among which is His saying to the Prophet (peace be upon him):
So seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and for the believing women
How numerous are the hadiths in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) seeks forgiveness for his sin, and we know that he also seeks forgiveness for the believers, because he was commanded to do so. The meaning of "seek forgiveness for your sin" is: ask Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to forgive your sin. Forgiveness is covering the sin and passing over it, because this is what the derivation indicates; it is derived from *mighfar*, which is the protection of the head by the known helmet placed on the head in battle, which protects it from arrows and covers it. And from that also is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith والذين جاؤوا من بعدهم يقولون ربنا اغفر لنا ولإخواننا الذين سبقونا بالإيمان
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
And these are the third category of the three categories about whom Allah the Exalted said:
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
[Al-Hashr 59:8]
So Allah described them with emigration and support. The second category:
And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
[Al-Hashr 59:9]
And these are the Ansar, the supporters of Madinah. The third category:
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
And this is a supplication for their brothers in their absence. As for the third verse, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said:
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established." ربنا اغفر ولوالدي وللؤمنين يوم يقوم الحساب
[Ibrahim 14:41]
So his saying:
And the believers
is a supplication for the believers in their absence. Thus, supplicating for the believers in their absence is from the ways of the Messengers (peace be upon them) and from the path of the Messengers. And among that is that we, in our prayer, supplicate for our brothers in their absence. Everyone says: "Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah" And this is a supplication. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Indeed, when you say that, you have greeted every righteous servant in the heavens and on earth.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 10:235
So when you say "Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah," it is a supplication for your brothers in their absence. Then the author mentioned the hadith of Abu al-Darda in its two wordings, that when a person supplicates for his brother in his absence, the angel says:
Amen, and for you the like.
meaning, for you the like of that. So the angel says "Ameen" to your supplication when you supplicate for your brother in his absence and says to you the like of it. This indicates the virtue of this, but this is for the one who did not ask you to supplicate for him. As for the one who asked you to supplicate for him and you did so, it is as if he is a witness, as if he is hearing your words, because he is the one who asked you. But if you supplicate for him in his absence without him informing you, without him asking you, then that is where the reward and the virtue lie. And success is from Allah.
