The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, "Recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al- Mu'awwidhatain (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) three times at dawn and dusk. It will suffice you in all respects."

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
These are two hadiths regarding the dhikr of the morning and evening, which al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*. The first is the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) commanded him to recite: Say, He is Allah, the One, and Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of the Daybreak, and Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, in the morning and evening three times, and he clarified that this suffices him from everything. As for the first surah, it is Surat al-Ikhlas: Say, He is Allah, the One, which Allah the Exalted made pure for Himself, so nothing is mentioned in it except what pertains to Himself (Exalted and Majestic is He). It contains no mention of the rulings of purification, prayer, sale, or anything else; it is all made pure for Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Then the one who recites it completes his sincerity to Allah the Exalted, so it is pure and it purifies its reciter from associating partners with Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) informed that it equals one-third of the Qur'an, but it does not suffice in place of it, nor does its equal suffice in its place. A thing may be equal to another thing in reward, but it does not suffice in its place. Have you not seen that when a person says, "There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs the praise, and He is able to do all things," he is like one who has freed four slaves from the descendants of Isma'il, and yet this does not suffice in place of freeing a slave. So there is a difference between equality in reward and sufficiency in expiation. For this reason, if a person recites Say, He is Allah, the One in the prayer, even if he recites it three times, it does not suffice in place of Surat al-Fatihah, even though if he recites it three times, it is as if he has recited the entire Qur'an, because it equals one-third of the Qur'an. As for Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of the Daybreak and Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, these are the two surahs that were revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) when the wicked Labyd ibn al-A'sam, the Jew, cast a spell on him. So Allah revealed these two surahs, and Jibril recited them over him as a ruqyah, and Allah removed the spell from him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: "No one who seeks refuge has sought refuge with anything like these two, so seek refuge with the Lord of the Daybreak." Al-Falaq is the splitting of the dawn and the Splitter of the seed and the kernel (Exalted and Majestic is He), from the evil of what He created, everything He created, and from the evil of the darkening night when it closes in, meaning: the night when it enters, because the night is when insects, wild animals, and other things increase, so seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the darkening night when it closes in, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, the sorceresses who tie knots of sorcery and blow into them with talismans and incantations, taking refuge in the devils and seeking their help, may Allah protect us from that, and from the evil of the envier when he envies, he is the one who casts the evil eye, for he affects with his eye, because the sorcerer affects and the one who casts the evil eye affects. So you are commanded to seek refuge with the Lord of the Daybreak (Exalted and Majestic is He) from the evil of what He created * and from the evil of the darkening night when it closes in * and from the evil of the blowers in knots * and from the evil of the envier when he envies. And reflect on the appropriateness of these three verses: from the evil of the darkening night when it closes in, the night, because the affliction occurs in it hidden, and sorcery is likewise hidden, and the evil eye is likewise hidden. So you seek refuge with the Lord of the Daybreak who splits the dawn so that it becomes clear, and splits the kernels so that they appear and emerge. This is part of the appropriateness between the thing invoked and the thing invoked for. As for Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, it is the other surah, also containing seeking refuge with Allah (Mighty and Majestic): Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind. He is the Lord of the kingdom, the possessor of the greatest authority, whom nothing opposes and whose words cannot be changed (Exalted and Majestic is He). The King of mankind, the God of mankind, meaning: the one they worship, the one who is worshipped rightly, so there is no true object of worship except Allah (Mighty and Majestic). From the evil of the whisperer who retreats * who whispers in the breasts of mankind. These are the whispers of the breasts that Satan throws into the heart of the son of Adam. And how much Satan throws into this world in this era of great whispers that disturb the person. And glory to Allah the Great, the world is called the world because it is lowly; it does not become complete from one aspect without being deficient in others. We have luxury in these days, in this era, a luxury for which there is no parallel in what came before. The blessings are available, security has planted its tents, and money, children, and everything else are present. So the apparent physical luxury is complete, but now the whispers and psychological illnesses and afflictions have increased among people until the world does not become complete, and the person relies upon it. Because if the world were complete from every aspect, it would make the Hereafter forgettable, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I do not fear poverty for you, but I fear that the world will be opened up to you and you will compete for it as those before you competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them." So Allah (Mighty and Majestic), when He opens up the world from one side, its clarity becomes turbid from another side or from several sides. And in the pre-Islamic poetry it is said: "A day against us and a day for us *** A day we are lowly and a day we are high." So the result is that this surah contains seeking refuge from the whisperer, and the whisperer sometimes occurs in a person regarding the fundamentals of religion, regarding the Lord Himself, regarding the Qur'an, and regarding the Messenger, until the person whispers about things he wishes were charcoal and would not speak of them. Whispers also occur in purification; some people are afflicted with whispers, may Allah protect us. He enters the bathroom for wudu' which does not take five minutes, but he stays for five hours, we ask Allah for well-being. In the prayer, you find him repeating the takbir of ihram, repeating the word "Allah" twenty times, "Allah is the Greatest," and he may be unable to do so, until some of them say, "I am now unable to pray at all," and the whispers lead him to abandoning the prayer, we ask Allah for well-being. The whispers occur in dealing with the family, until some of them are made to believe that their family has cast a spell on their food and drink, so he eats from restaurants. And even a man may speak to his family, saying, "O so-and-so's wife," and Satan says to him, "You have divorced her," and he makes his life difficult. Until some of them, when they open the mushaf to read, every time they turn a page, Satan makes them believe that they said, "My wife is divorced," so they abandon reading the Qur'an. So the whispers are great, but driving them away is very easy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to whom Allah gave the summaries of words and the openings and closings of words, when this matter was complained to him, said (peace and blessings be upon him): "If one of you finds that, let him seek refuge with Allah and let him stop." Two words: let him seek refuge with Allah, saying, "I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan," but he says it with sincerity and purity, and that he is truly turning to Allah, for there is no escape from Allah except to Him. And let him stop, he turns away from it, he turns away. He says to himself, "Why am I even performing wudu' and praying? Do I not hope for Allah and fear Him?" So he stops doing this. He turns away completely. If he uses this method, even though he will press upon himself and will be in pain and will be tormented, but this is at the beginning, and then it will disappear completely, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not speak from desire. He said: "Let him seek refuge with Allah and let him stop." Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind * the King of mankind * the God of mankind * from the evil of the whisperer. These three phrases, the three verses, it can be said that they encompass the categories of tawhid (the oneness of Allah). The Lord of mankind, tawhid of what, Ahmad? The student: Lordship. The Shaykh: Lordship. The King of mankind, the names and attributes, because the King does not deserve to be King except with the perfection of His names and attributes. The God of mankind, the oneness of worship. From the evil of the whisperer who retreats * who whispers in the breasts of mankind * from the jinn and mankind. The scholars said: The one who retreats is the one who retreats when Allah is mentioned. For this reason, it came in the hadith: "When the ghaylān (phantoms) appear, hasten with the adhan." The ghaylān are illusions and phantoms that pass by the person in his journey, especially in the early journeys on camels, or when a person travels alone, the devils appear to him in disturbing forms: a lion, a wolf, a hyena, devils, jinn. When the ghaylān appear, hasten with the adhan, meaning say, "Allah is the Greatest," so they disappear, because the devil retreats when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is mentioned. From the evil of the whisperer who retreats * who whispers in the breasts of mankind * from the jinn and mankind. Meaning: this whispering is from the jinn and from mankind. The jinn means the devils, and they are intended to be the devils who whisper in the breasts. And mankind also, the devils of the children of Adam. And how many devils there are in our time and before our time until the Day of Resurrection. And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals, and thus for the followers of the prophets, enemies from among the criminals. They come to the people and whisper, "This is such and such, and that is such and such," and perhaps they whisper to the simple among the common people, whether in false schools of thought and false religions or otherwise. The important thing for them is the whispering of the devils of mankind. Beware of them, beware of the devils of mankind who whisper to you in matters they make attractive in your soul, and they are corrupt. So the important thing is that these three surahs, it is recommended for the person to recite them every morning and every evening due to the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with them. We ask Allah to guide us and you to what is good and righteous, and to protect us from the evils of our souls and the badness of our deeds.
