The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This chapter was mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: the prohibition of torturing animals, children, parents, and those over whom you have authority. It is forbidden for you to torture them by beating or otherwise except for a legitimate religious reason. Then he cited the words of Allah the Exalted:[An-Nisa 4:36] until He said: [An-Nisa 4:36] [An-Nisa 4:36] All of these are people who have rights. "And be kind to parents" — they are the greatest of people in right over you, the mother and the father.
"Those near of kin" are the relatives from the mother's side or the father's side. "Orphans" are the young ones whose fathers have died.
[An-Nisa 4:36] "The needy" are the poor. "The near neighbor" is the close neighbor. "The far neighbor" is the distant neighbor. It is said that "the companion by your side" is the wife, or it is said to be the companion in travel. "The wayfarer" is the traveler whose journey has been cut off. [An-Nisa 4:3] "What your right hands possess" refers to slaves and animals. A person is commanded to be kind to them. If they are from the children of Adam, i.e., slaves, he should feed them from what he eats, clothe them from what he wears, house them in dwellings befitting them, and not burden them with what they cannot bear.
Then he mentioned the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The cat was a female cat which she imprisoned and did not place water near her, nor did she place food near her, until she died. So she entered the Fire because of this cat and was tortured because of it, refuge with Allah, even though it was a cat that was worth nothing. But she treated it badly with this bad treatment: she imprisoned it until it died of hunger. It is understood from this hadith that if she had placed food and drink sufficient for it, there would be no harm in that.
