The Shaykh : Then the author said: "Chapter on the Treatment of Women"
The term "treatment" (al-'ishrah) means interaction, which is the conduct between two people who have a connection, whereby one treats the other. The interaction between spouses is governed by custom, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted: and His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:228] So, interaction is the conduct between any two people who have a bond, such as friends or spouses, and so on. What is this interaction governed by?

The Shaykh : It is governed by custom, and treating one's spouse with kindness is an obligatory command from Allah, as He said: and wisdom requires it, because treating one's spouse with kindness fosters affection and the continuity of the bond between the two. However, if each of them refuses to treat the other with kindness, the situation will become serious, and separation will inevitably occur, unless Allah Mighty and Majestic wills to reconcile them. Treating one's spouse with kindness includes the man enjoying his wife where Allah has commanded him to do so, which is by approaching her in her front private part, except during menstruation and during obligatory acts of worship, such as fasting and being in the state of ihram.
