The Shari'ah Remedy for Sorcery
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I heard one of the scholars say: If a person suspects that sorcery has been performed on him, he should take seven leaves of the sidr tree, place them in a container of water, and recite over them the two chapters of protection (al-Mu'awwidhatan), the Verse of the Throne, and the chapter: , and the saying of Allah the Exalted: [al-Baqarah: 102], and the chapter al-Fatihah. What is the authenticity of this? And what should a person do if he suspects that he has been subjected to sorcery? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A: There is no doubt that sorcery exists, and some of it is mere illusion, and that it occurs and has an effect by the permission of Allah , as Allah the Exalted said regarding the sorcerers:[Al-Baqarah 2:102] meaning the two angels: [al-Baqarah: 102].
So sorcery has an effect, but it is by the cosmic and decreed permission of Allah, for there is nothing in existence except by the decree and destiny of Allah . However, this sorcery has a treatment and a remedy. It once occurred to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah delivered him from it and saved him from its evil. They found what the sorcerer had done, so it was taken and destroyed, and Allah cured His Prophet of it, peace and blessings be upon him. Likewise, if what the sorcerer has done is found—such as the knotting of threads or the tying of nails to one another or the like—then that is to be destroyed; for it is the practice of sorcerers to blow into the knots and strike them for their malicious purposes. It may be that what they intended is accomplished by the permission of Allah, or it may be nullified, for our Lord is Able to do all things, .
Sometimes the sorcery is treated by recitation, whether that is by the recitation of the person subjected to sorcery himself, if his mind is sound, or sometimes by the recitation of another person over him. He blows over his chest or any of his limbs and recites over him al-Fatihah, the Verse of the Throne, and[Al-Ikhlas 112:1], the two chapters of protection, and the known verses of sorcery from the chapter al-A'raf, the chapter Yunus, and the chapter Ta-Ha. From the chapter al-A'raf, the saying of Allah the Exalted: [al-A'raf: 117-119].
And from the chapter Yunus, the saying of the Exalted: [Yunus: 79-82].
And from the chapter Ta-Ha, the saying of the Exalted: [Ta-Ha: 65-69].
Also, the chapter: is recited to its end, and the chapters [Al-Ikhlas 112:1] [Al-Falaq 113:1] [An-Nas 114:1]. It is better to repeat the chapter [Al-Ikhlas 112:1] and the two chapters of protection three times, then supplicate for him for healing: Riyad as-Salihin 902, and repeat this three times. And thus he is treated by saying: Mishkat al-Masabih 1534, and repeat this three times, and supplicate for him for healing and well-being. If he says in his ruqyah: Sunan Abi Dawud 3898Sahih (Al-Albani) and repeats it (three times), that is good. All of this is from the beneficial remedy. If he recites this ruqyah and supplication over water, and then the person subjected to sorcery drinks from it and bathes with the rest, this is from the causes of healing and well-being by the permission of Allah. If seven leaves of green sidr are placed in the water after being crushed, this is also from the causes of healing. This has been tried many times and Allah has made it beneficial. We have done this with many people, and Allah benefited them thereby.
So this is a beneficial and useful remedy for those subjected to sorcery. Likewise, this remedy benefits the one who is prevented from his wife, for some people may be prevented from their wives and unable to have intercourse with them. If he uses this ruqyah and this supplication, it will benefit him by the permission of Allah, whether he recites it over himself, or another recites it over him, or he recites it over water and then drinks from it and bathes with the rest. All of this is beneficial by the permission of Allah for the one subjected to sorcery and the one prevented from his wife. These are from the causes, and Allah the Exalted is the Healer alone, and He is Able to do all things. In His hand, Exalted and Majestic is He, are the remedy and the disease, and everything is by His decree and destiny, Exalted is He. It is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:517 and this is a favor from Him . And Allah is the One who grants success and guides to the straight path.
Say: O you disbelievers!
قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَthat which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut
وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَA: There is no doubt that sorcery exists, and some of it is mere illusion, and that it occurs and has an effect by the permission of Allah , as Allah the Exalted said regarding the sorcerers:
And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone
وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَى مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍunless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.

And from the chapter Yunus, the saying of the Exalted:
(79) And Pharaoh said, "Bring to me every learned magician." (80) So when the magicians came, Moses said to them, "Throw down whatever you will throw." (81) And when they had thrown, Moses said, "What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters. (82) And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it."

(65) They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw." (66) He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes]. (67) And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses. (68) Allah said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior. (69) And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
