The ruling on the common people saying, "O angels of protection, wake me up at such-and-such time"
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
It has become widespread among some of the common people for one of them to say before sleeping: "O angels of protection, wake me up at such-and-such time, or at such-and-such time?"
Answer: This is not permissible; rather, it is major shirk (associating partners with Allah); because it is supplication to other than Allah and seeking from the absent, so it is like seeking from the jinn, idols, and the dead, due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[al-Jinn: 18] and His saying, the Exalted:[Fatir 35:13] If you call upon them, they will not hear your call, and even if they did hear, they would not respond to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disavow your association of partners with Us, and no one can inform you like the All-Aware.[Fatir: 13 - 14] So the Exalted named the supplication to other than Him, whether to the dead, idols, jinn, or angels, as shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Him, the Exalted. And He said, (peace and blessings be upon him):: [al-Jinn: 6] And He said, the Exalted:[al-Mu'minun: 117] So He named those who supplicate to other than Him as disbelievers, and this encompasses all those who are supplicated to other than Allah, whether they are the dead, idols, jinn, or angels. The only exception to this is the living, present, and capable one, due to the saying of Allah, the Exalted, in the story of Musa:[al-Qasas: 15].
And from this shirk is the saying of some people: "O jinn, take him," "O seven, take him," or "O jinn of the afternoon, take him," or "O jinn of such-and-such valley" or "O jinn of such-and-such town." This is all major shirk, and supplication to other than Allah from the absent. So if he says: "O angels of Allah, wake me up," or "protect me," this is major shirk. Or "O jinn of the house, protect me" or "wake me up," this is major shirk. We seek refuge in Allah from that.
And it is obligatory for the Muslim to beware of that, and to seek aid from Allah alone and ask Him alone, for He is sufficient, the Exalted, and He is the One capable of all things, and He is the One who said, (peace and blessings be upon him)::[Ghafir: 60], and the One who said, the Exalted:[al-Baqarah: 186] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2516Hasan (Darussalam).
We ask Allah to grant us and all Muslims success in understanding His religion and safety from the causes of His anger. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.

And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed.
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden.
And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
وَمَنْ يَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ لا بُرْهَانَ لَهُ بِهِ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِ إِنَّهُ لا يُفْلِحُ الْكَافِرُونَthe one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy
And from this shirk is the saying of some people: "O jinn, take him," "O seven, take him," or "O jinn of the afternoon, take him," or "O jinn of such-and-such valley" or "O jinn of such-and-such town." Call upon Me; I will respond to you.
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah's aid.
We ask Allah to grant us and all Muslims success in understanding His religion and safety from the causes of His anger. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
