Ruling on a menstruating woman entering the Sacred Precinct and praying in it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The sister who indicated her name with the initials H. S. M. from Ras Tanura says in her letter: What is the ruling on a woman going to the Sacred Precinct to pray in it during her monthly period, knowing that she is menstruating?
A: A woman going to the Sacred Precinct and praying with the people while her monthly period—namely, menstruation—has come upon her, and she knows this, is a great abomination for two reasons:
First: she has no prayer; she is not permitted to engage in prayer while in this state of ritual impurity, so that is a great abomination and her prayer is invalid.
Second: she is not permitted to sit in the Sacred Mosque while menstruating, for the menstruating woman and the one in major ritual impurity are prohibited from sitting in the mosque. However, passing through or crossing is permissible out of need. Praying while menstruating is even greater and more heinous, so this action is not permissible for her. Rather, it is obligatory for her to remain in her house, and she is not permitted to go to the mosque until this menstruation ends. Once she has purified herself from it, she may go to the mosque with her sisters if she wishes.
As for going while in a state of menstruation to participate in the prayer or to sit with the women in the mosque, all of this is an abomination and is not permissible. Prayer while menstruating, and while in other states of major or minor ritual impurity, is invalid. There is no doubt that this action is heinous, and it may lead its doer to disbelief in Allah; for she is like one who mocks, praying while she is menstruating. This is a great and terrible abomination. If her intention is to belittle the religion of Allah, to mock it, to ridicule it, to deny the religion of Allah, and to be indifferent, then this is apostasy from Islam, may Allah protect us from that.
And success is from Allah.
