Question: Mockery of the outward rituals of the religion, such as shaving the beard and shortening the garments, has appeared in many Muslim societies. Answer: There is no doubt that mocking Allah, His Messenger, His verses, His Shari'ah, and His rulings is among the types of disbelief, due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :[At-Tawbah 9:65] Do not make excuses. You have disbelieved after you had believed. [Surah al-Tawbah: 65-66].
This includes mocking tawhid (the oneness of Allah), or prayer, or zakah (the obligatory alms), or fasting, or Hajj (the major pilgrimage), or any other of the agreed-upon rulings of the religion.
As for mocking one who lets his beard grow, or shortens his garments and guards against letting them hang below the ankles, or similar matters whose rulings may be obscure, this requires detailed consideration. It is obligatory to be cautious of this, and to advise one who is known to do any of this so that he repents to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and adheres to His Shari'ah. One should also be cautious of mocking one who holds fast to the Shari'ah in this, in obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and out of fear of the anger and punishment of Allah, and of apostasy from his religion while he is not aware. We ask Allah for ourselves and for all Muslims to be kept safe from all evil, for He is the best of those asked. And success is from Allah.
